Worth getting 360 without Live?

I'm thinking about getting a 360 and modding it to play backups. I'm not really a hardcore gamer so if I don't have LIVE it's not much of a loss, and I'd get banned from Live eventually anyway. But are 360 games only worth playing if you have LIVE? I realize that's kinda subjective, but I'm curious to know what you guys think.

depends on the game, i think live is a key thing to have though. thats why some of us have 2 consoles 1 mod and one un-mod.

how many months have you been debating buying the 360??? Sir, its a game console, NOT a house or a car, just buy one, jeeze.

Xbox is defainlty worth it without LIVE. LIVE isn't that important to me, besides online shooting games are best played on a PC. Xbox has got GTA IV, so who needs LIVE?

lol. A valid point sir, but I'm a college student with a budget who intends to get a ps3 when it's capable of being modded. So I don't want to pass around cash needlessly.

you're not missing anything. you can still connect to LIVE silver for free. that's what i do for nba 2k8 to get roster updates.

I have 2 modded consoles 1 up and 1 down i have never used live
I think live is a rip off to pay for a Live subscription then pay for points to purchase maps or small games, on top of the price of your console add a game how much have you spent? Well you tell me that?s my opinion and I am entitled to it

There's speculation that MS may announce a price cut for the Gold subscription at this years E3.
@ jewdaddy... your best option would be to just use the free 30 Gold trial which comes with every 360. You may find it's worth having LIVE.
With LIVE, you can take a 6 hour single player game, like CoD4, and turn it into something that you'll be playing for months.
LIVE adds a lot of replayability to most games.
I'm 37 years old. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I do game a lot. I never cared about playing online. It never apealed to me. Until almost 2 years ago when I figured I'd try my free LIVE trial with CoD3. I've been a member ever since.

gotta love the quality posts from barny, but hey it's freedom of speech right? Uh huh
Anyway I think it could go either way with xbox live. I remember way back when halo came out I bought xbox live thinking I could play halo on it. I wasted 50 dollars just to find out I could play on xbconnect for free. Even when halo 2 came out (prereleased french version) we played on xbconnect and there were no problems.
Then when the 360 was released (my friend got it on launch) it just looked amazing. Since xbox live is integrated and not just a option on the dash, it's more versitile. You can run messengers, or chat with a friend while you're playing a game.
I'd say it has come a long way and is way better than before. Try it out and you'll probably be addicted.
BTW: I know a few people who have been playing backups online for a long time now, thinking they're going to be banned. Suprisingly none of them are banned yet. I figure it's just a matter of time but maybe not. It's up to you to decide if you want to risk it. If you make sure you have the latest firmware then you should be set. I've changed my opinion on the whole modded firmware issue lately.

I was thinking about whether or not to get the 360 even without Live before I got my 360, and I'm actually happy that I went with purchasing a 360 instead, say a Playstation 3. The 360 would be A LOT better with Live, but my opinion still stays the same. It's really up the user on whether or not he wants to buy the 360. It's the cheaper of the two consoles where you actually have a controller (the Wii seems like a different genre of consoles IMO, no offense to any Nintendo fans), and there are still better games right now than the Playstation 3.
I'm not sure about the PS3 now that they have Metal Gear Solid out, but I still think the 360 is a solid console that has some things going for it other than the Live. For instance, I believe they have a better controller than any other console. I also believe that the Grand Theft Auto series will help them get an edge in the console wars because it used the 360 as its primary platform. And finally, I think the 360 simply has better games than any other system. But that's just my opinion though.

ermm.... im also new 2 the xbox scene... 2 b fair live isnt all that great.. i mean its gud but nothin ur gna loose slp over.... im weighing up greats and no so greats as wel.. but 4 now ive got 2 wks left of my first free month trial. what im thinking is use the month... then mod by elite.... not use live then until a new mod comes out which fully bypasses live authenticaion... cud b a while but 4 me.. id rather have loadz o dif games then have a few games which cost me alot more only 2 b able 2 play online...
but 2 b fair i wasnt happi wen i heard u gt 2 pay for online cuz for the ps3 u dont... but heyy.. poo hapns right... i lyk my xbox but b4 my xbox i always playd games on ma PC.... id like to carry on the trend of spending as little as possible on software so no live and a mod is the way 4ward ... @ least 4 me lol

when you have a modded console on LIVE, but LIVE on monthly basis, don't buy a $60 year subscription and then get banned 20 days into it.
And yeah the PS3 online or whatever it's called isn't even near the level of LIVE. I have said this before, but i don't want to be a fanboi: clean and simple: Xbox for LIVE, ps3 for a bbq grill.

agreeing with bhetrick's remarks live adds a TON of replayibility to a game, that is the MAIN Factor. if it wasnt for that i could care less about anything else, i can chat with my friend on a pc or just call him up. Halo 3 came out when? and i still play it from time to time. I would at least try the free 30 day subscription you get and just see for yourself.
