I just recently purchased a PS3 40GB console. I am very seriously considering purchasing a Samsung HDTV, model LN46A650. I was wondering which HDMI cable to get. Is it really necessary to buy a Monster HDMI cable? They cost over $100 and I have read on Amazon reviews that there are cheaper alternatives that work the same. Any advice on which cable (name brand or model #) to get would be greatly appreciated. I am only in need of a cable up to 4 feet long. Thanks.

If all you need is 4ft then any model will do. You'd need the high end cables when you start running longer distances. Also consider getting a HDMI v1.3 that way if you decide to get an HD audio receiver as well you'll future proof.

You will find that a 15 dollar HDMI cable will yield identical results as a 200 dollar cable. Buy the cheapest cord you can get for the length you need, otherwise you're just paying for branding.

^^ I can attest to this. I foolishly purchased the Nyko HDMI cable specifically designed for the PS3. It cost $60 (not bad considering some are $120).

My brother upgraded to an HDTV in his place. I suggested getting an HDMI cable off ebay. If it doesn't work, he would only be out x-dollars (something like $10-$20). Sure enough, he got that HDMI cable off ebay for like $15 and he hasn't looked back since. If/when it craps out because it's a no-name brand, it's more than worth ~$15 that has lasted this long.

On the recent TV program the gadget show in the UK they did a comparison with two HDMI cables 1 cost something stupid like £100 the other one cost £10 guess what the out come was? Yes correct no difference at all the £10 cable gave exactly the same quality results as the £100 cable the test was done on identical TV?s with the same blue ray players the reason the results was the same they say is because an hdmi signal is digital so it makes no difference what so ever.

Thanks for all the info. I figured the cheaper cables would be just as good, but just wanted to make sure.

Upto 2 meter long cables any will do there is no difference. It's only long cables where the monster and other expensive cables start to perform better.

So for example you have a HD overhead projector, you'll need something upto 10m of cable to twist aroun the walls. A cheap 10m will show degrodation while some expensive ones dont.

Also you do want a version 1.3 HDMI cable as these can support a lot more bandwidth. Be careful when buying as some do not state what version they are, so if you get a v1.0 well it'll have a very slow transfer rate conpared to a 1.3.

Latest version is a 1.3c HDMI cable, not much difference between the 1.3a or 1.3b though.

I thought the minor revisions only had to do with the hardware and not the cables?
