i am thinking of paying someone to flash my 79 with the latest ixtreme firmware. I cant play on live so will i ever need to upgrade the firmware in the future? All i want it to be able to do is read backups of my originals so i dont care about installing later firmware versions just for the increased live security. Or are firmware upgrades often needed to play some newer games?

I also know that having a 79 i will have to void the warranty since a chip needs to be installed. This means if i get the rrod am i screwed? can all rrod be fixed using xclamp method? is this permanent. I dont want to mod my box incase it red rings and a repair service other than microsoft cannot fix it.

ps: i keep my xbox elevated off the ground on top of a small table approx 30cm from a wall in a tiled area. Rekon this is sufficient enough to prevent red ring?

Any help would be appreciated.

they still haven't found a way to hack to 79 without soldering a chip? Not sure on this myself.

the FW is FW, it will never get updated by MS, LIVE only updates your dash, and that can also be done offline with games or CDs.

This isn't the PSP and we aren't Sony-bags, 1 FW will let you play all games and all future games.

thanks for the reply clearing up about FW questions i had.

Also what about the red ring issue. Do you guys think i should not worry about this? i could even move my xbox out further so its like 1m aways from any walls on each side and also elevated.

Are the rrod fixes permanent? i dont want to pay someone to fix and then find it just happens again.

Ps: ive read that ms will fix xboxes if u pay them when they r out of warrenty. what about if it has been opened and obviously tampered with, (installation of a passkey).

EDIT: was told to post this here also

Will the hitachi ever be able to be flash without the need for a passkey? i read somewhere that the next firmware toolbox would include a software mod for the 79 drives, think its toolbox 4.7. However no word on if this is going to be released.

If you click on the README file that FWToolbox came with, find the part where it has written info about all the versions up to now and what will be on the next one.And yes,for the next one,the FWtoolbox team is working to get a softmod like all other drives with no passkey.Im not saying there will be a softmod.. but that he readme file it says that there will be a method to flash v79 drives with no passkey on the ..Whats new to come section.
