this might sound dumb but i wanted to know can north American players vs European players on xbox live. if so does it work for all the games?

Yes, you can play with anyone who has Xbox Live. The only problem is two main factors

1. The further away from someone you are the more chance you will have lag in gameplay (with games where someone has to host using their own connection like Rainbow Six Vegas 1 & 2)

2. The time zones, having such a large gap in the local time can make it hard for you to find each other on at the same time.

Only games i really play online are Forza 2 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. The only reason you would not be able to play with them is if you are using the game companies servers and they have them split up by region for better connections.
