I'm debating whether or not to continue using Memorex for playing my backups, I've tried a few brands so far & only one type of Memorex works for me. I've read using said media would damage my laser so I'd rather use Verbatim from Singapore if I could somehow get them to work. Here's all my specifications if anyone could please help me.

Media :
- Verbatim 8.0x 5 pack jewel cases/Singapore/Bestbuy.
(works a bit, then disc unreadable/dirty disc error)
- Verbatim 2.4x 20 pack spindle/India/Bestbuy.
(can't start, unrecognizable disc type)
- Memorex 2.4x 3 pack jewel cases/Taiwan I think/Circuit City/Staples.
(works great, almost no problems most of the time)
- Memorex 8.0x 25 pack spindle/Staples.
(can't start, unrecognizable disc type)
- Nexxtech 8.0x 5 pack jewel cases/Staples.
(can't start, unrecognizable disc type)

verbatim for sure. memorex can ruin your lens over time.

agree with above, even if it will cost you a few dollars more buy the Verbatim. And avoid the Memosux discs at all costs.

I used memorex and had a 100% success rate with them. But when I read that this brand does a number on your laser, I would rather spend the extra $$ for Singapore Verbs and have the piece of mind that my laser is being preserved. In a perfect world, we would be able to play xbox 360 ISOs off an external HD (I know just wishful thinking).......

This isn't 2006 where only Verbs will read. All those discs should be readable no matter how crappy (memosux) they are. I think the probelme is, the read speed isn't compatible with some of the discs. WTH do you set it at 5X anyway, I didn't even know you could set it at 5X.

setting the read speed at 5x is available in the newest ixtreme firmwares. you have options for 2x, 5x, 8x, and 12x(default for the original firmware). i actually turn my down to 8x, as it lowers the stress on the hardware, prolly the same reason he has his set at 5x. it takes longer for the system to load stuff from the disc, but given the unreliability of the 360's hardware components, anything that lowers these stress levels is helpful. it also reduces heat, not enough to really matter, but a little. mainly the wear and tear on the ODD's laser and motor. and you may be right about the discs and the speeds. some discs arent set up to handle such slow speeds, although i beleive that most dual layers discs, regardless of the brand, are set to read at 2x and up, prolly somewhere around 20x max right now. and writing to the disc is generally 2.4x to 10x.

if you feel comfortable enough to reflash your drive, you might try bumping it to 8x to see if it makes a difference. just out of curiousity, what speed do you burn your discs at? if its higher then 2.4x, you might try burning one at that speed and see if its the data not being burn to the disc correctly. a slower speed "generally" produces a more reliable disc.

My irl friend who modded my X-box 360 set it to 5x, but I personally dont know which of the four I should be using.

I burn @ 2.4x, but I've tried other speeds & they all end up having the same "unrecognizable disc" problem.

I would say use the verbs as well. But really with consoles it's a case of lesser evils.. use whatever works reliably on your particular drive. It may not like verbs yet lesser quality disks are fine.. it's a strange world.

If you are having general disk read problems you really should consider replacing your laser while they are cheap. £14 solves lots of the disk error problems, and it's a 5 minute job ;)

i would say stick with the current media, the only reason being is cause i see it as if you laser is stressing to read the media then switch, but since you have a 100% success rate, then maybe its not straining your laser. are you getting skips or anything?

I've only played a bit so far, so I think my lasers still in good condition for now. As for skips none noticed so far, the Memorex work fine. Hopefully I can figure out how to get Verbatims to work so I don't have future worries.... :/, if I can't figure anything out I'll just stick with Memorex >_<;;

Did you mess with the POT settings? If not, I'm almost 100% sure Verbs won't read it's because of 5X reading speed.

I BURN all my discs at 2.4X

if memorex is the only media reading im sure your lens its ready to r.i.p happened to my samsung after 6 months of memorex. tried a few verbs and i would get disc errors, then would try my old memorex and the games ran fine for about 3 more weeks then nothing read at all. now i have a benq and use nothing but verbs and everything is fine so far ;)

Sorry I'm still new, whats POT settings?
I'll try 2/8/12x read speeds & see if that makes a difference.

Use the original read speed, don't do anything lower. POT is a turn screw on dvd drive to adjust voltage to the laser. No need to mess with that.

Please, ask yourself some question:

Did you change your drive read speed back to default 12X?
Did you burn at 2.4X?

That's most peculiar. Memosux works and Verbs don't.

Memosux still works after those changes?

Yeah they did, but I finally got my Verbatims to work after some more testing. With my setup 5x/8x/& 12x = unrecognizable disc error, but after giving 2x as my last try they finally worked. So far no problems. Hope this helps someone who gets disc unreadable also.
