Despite piracy, Lil Wayne's latest CD is a monster hit

article published on 18 June, 2008

Despite another year of falling CD sales and the leaking of his album to P2P networks weeks ago, the prolific rapper Lil Wayne's latest CD, ?Tha Carter III? sold 420,000 copies on launch day and has surpassed 1 million for its first week sold, marking the first time in 3 years that an album has sold over a million in its initial week. The sales also eclipses any other CD launched this year, ... [ read the full article ]

Ok I was going to write this before the first post got here, but its too late now. DO NOT POST unless you are posting about the article. I do not care if you hate rap, I don't care if a rapper killed your family. Keep this on topic...

Now with that said...back to the comments.

It's a cultural thing, you wouldn't understand.

If music is good, people will buy it. P2P networks will not hold a good artist back.

I'm not surprised.
Lil' Wayne is the greatest rapper that is STILL rapping and alive right next to 'The Game', meaning, I'm not including Eazy-E, Tupac, B.I.G, Wu Tang Caln and such. 50 Cent and them are too commerical.

I have the cd, and I really love it, I play it in my car and there is only 1 song I skip.

Off topic but 'Tie My Hands' to me, is the best song on the album, it's about New Orleans and it features Robin Thicke.

@21Q: Go and "Buy" 'Tie My Hands' and you'll like it, it's a deep song.

goodswipe practically said it all. if you like the artist, you'll buy the cd to support, even if you downloaded the songs.

slight off topic: there's nothing like hearing ryan leslie playing lollipop on the piano.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

You gotta remember where he got his influence from. Texas and Louisiana rap - mostly Texas style. Check out anything from DEA, SUC, or any other OG Houston rapper. That's where it's at my friend, so not commercial, that is until everyone started catching on.

(i just found out wal-mart only carries clean versions)
i couldnt return it...

so i went to target and got the explicit version.. =]

we support good artist and good music.. lil wayne is FIRE =]

and if ur not sure what people see.. its matching groups of words that sound good together.. soo good that nobody ever thought about it before.. like woww.. did he just say that!?!? because one word can have multiple meanings.. sounds pretty good.. common shouldn't have won the lyricist of the year.. but whatever, i guess being too cocky has its prices too.

I know right. I was shocked to see that they carried Rob Zombies version of Halloween. That movie has more sex, violence, and curse words then most cd's out there.

Okay then, I will post a useful comment. It's surprising to see that so many people have bought this one album. I mean the fact that it was leaked almost 2 months in advance of the release and it still gets these sales is amazing. I don't own one cd of music, and have only bought one ever. I understand wanting to support the artist, but I didn't think so many other people did as well. And considering the massive decline in cd sales, the amount of sales is even more incredible.

This is what I thought about it, but my perception of this kind of music got the better of me. And I don't hate it, I just don't appreciate it lyrically. And btw goodswipe, I was raised and live in the culture, but I still don't get it....

People buying CD's makes me laugh. If you are worried that if no one buys CD's music will disappear don't. Artists rake in millions on tours. I will never buy a CD again in my life and haven't in over 6 years.

Why do white people always wanna pass judgement on rap music that they aren't even aware of what some of the music represents? So if this was some rock album people would be saying "oh that's great." It's no different if I were to say rock aint nothin but a bunch of emo makeup wearing crossdressing freaks screaming in a microphone.

Some of the tracks on the album actually speak allot on political real life stuff that's going on, it's actually educational in a sense, just listen to the track "misunderstood" and you'll hear allot of what black/minorities in general go through. But some people wont see past their pre-judgements because they're bigots. So listen to the album at least before you brush it off as crap!!

See, that's the thing. I could say that new or classic country sing about there wiskey, but that is a stereotype, and that is what you are doing, stereotyping rap, saying it only talks about 'drugs, cheating, sex', you obviously haven't heard The Carter III.

Like I said, listen to 'Tie My Hands' he's rapping about New Orleans and how his city is underwater and that the mayor isn't doing anything. As well as his track, 'Dontgetit' (This is the same track as 'Misunderstood' that fgamer is talking about). He is talking about the black minorities and how the jail is full of crack dealers and not the real criminals, the rapiest and such. The other track 'Dr. Carter', the lyrics and the way he puts his words together, is amazing. Comfortable, is another good track, it's about a woman, and how she shouldn't take his love for granted.

The rap you hear, is the mainstream garbage put out by 50 cent and Soulja Boy talking about how he get's money, or superman-ing that h-e. I hate that garbage. I love rap, don't get me wrong, but I love it more when it's got meaning, and that's why I downloaded it when it leaked and bought The Carter III when it came out.

going to get a lot of sh*t here, but i'm sick and tired of people complaining about new orleans and how nothing is getting done.....

thats their own fault for building a city next to the ocean that is under the freaking sea level!! that would be like me building a house on top of MT. ST. Helens and then go crying when the damn volcano explodes and i lose everything.

Tell me about it. Hurricanes have been hitting the gulfcoast forever. A devastating storm isn't just likely, it's a guarantee. I've never understood why people would build below sea level or on barrier islands and then whine when they get nailed by the big one. Look at all the things that were done in holland to prevent these types of flood disasters. But the morons in nola didn't learn anything, they'll just half-ass rebuild it and it'll just happen again.

People shouldn't give you sh*t for that, I understand where you are coming from, it was a dumb move on whoever made that city.

I'm not too brushed up on the whole NO situation (I guess living in Canada puts you in a dark corner), but, is anything being done to fix that city? Is all the water out or is the city actually underwater now?

its still in the process of being rebuilt, but from what i've read/watched on the news its pretty much all dried out and all, just rebuilding the city as it was before.

and your right that people shouldnt give me sh*t about it, but there are those out there that would be like, oh how can you be like that, its sad that they couldnt do anything about it, or nothing is being done for them. when they had plenty of warning that it was coming, and could have left, and could rebuild their own darn houses/towns as many other people do after a tornado/flood. heck, i'm in the process of rebuilding our vacation house in WI due to the massive floodings up here and there isnt anything we could have done since the house is about 20 feet above the lake; its just what happens when you get 18 inches of rain overnight.

you should only take flak for saying something like "they shouldn't have rebuilt it."
regardless of how true it may be.

also, i don't consider buying a major(riaa)-label artist's cd to be supporting them.
the royalties they get from the cd's seem to be low and on a downturn.
i only break boycott on accident, and it's only happened once.

if you want good rap, get aesop rock's newest release none shall pass.
his stuff is amazing and unique, and of course independently produced and distributed.

with the off-topic out of the way:
he's doing his job as a modern major-label artist.
nowadays they all pretty much either tour or put out Something non-stop.

Hmph why is it that it's only white people that pass judgment on rap? I know plenty of people right here in NY and NJ, and the majority of them are either african american, hispanic, or asian. They each have their own taste in music, and a lot of them dislike rap for their own reason. Actually, most of the white people I know embrace this music. So really the generalization of only white people "hating" so to speak is wrong.

This has turned more into an argument instead of a discussion. To avoid any complications I'm done with this topic.

And then I went looking for a clean version of one song, so I headed to good ol' Wal-Mart, and both the retail and online stores do not carry the CD at all. Turns out the band didn't have a "clean" version of it's CD, so I'm outta luck. Thanks for nothing Wal-Mart!

Yeah, and they also carry games like GTA IV. LOL, hypocrites.
