I've the above config on my Japanese Wii(D2B) and has been working fine for last few months. Initially, I get #001 error while loading Wii Ski(NTSC) and Speed Racer(NTSC) but problem solved after I updated Wiikey to 1.9s.
I'm able to play SMG(NTSC) by using brickblock. I'm also able to play orignal Wii Fit(JAP) after it ask for an update via the game. I've also tried to download Wii Fit(NTSC) and able to play it by using brickblock again. It seems like my Jap Wii is almost a perfect console until I start to mess with Mario Kart(NTSC).
I use brickblock on Mario Kart(NTSC) and it loaded the infamous black screen. Read from forum that even through the Wii is 3.2J firmware, Mario Kart still require 3.1J_V2 to work. Therefore, I use Wii Update Manager(WuM) to replace 3.1U_V2 with 3.2J_V2 from Mario Kart(NTSC).
I loaded the patched Mario Kart(NTSC - 3.1J_V2) and updated it when it prompt for update. The game went through and I was able to play it on my Jap Wii!! Wii still showing 3.2J firmware and everything is looks fine. I carry on to install Mario Kart Channel. I'm able to install the Mario Kart Channel(no duplicate channels) but was not able to connect to internet. I carry on playing with Mario Kart and turn it off after an hour.
The next morning, my Jap Wii cant read Mario Kart(NTSC) diss. It also unable to read all my backups accept Naruto(JAP) backup and Wii Fit(JAP) original disc. It does not read either Wiikey update (1.9s) or config discs(1.4) and Wiikey 1.9b recovery it not working too. Bascially, it seems that the Wii or Wiikey is half dead. I updated to 3.3J and do a factory reset but no luck.
I cant seems to find a solution in the forum to fix it and I dont think is due to soldering issues or bad DVD media as all has been working fine till playing Mario Kart(NTSC) with channel installed. I strongly think is either due to Mario Kart 3.1J_V2 updates or Mario Kart Channel issues.
I've paid my price for it and I hope this is a good info for players who wish to try out updates on their Wii.
Has anyone encounter the similar problem as mine and I appreciate anyone to advise and give their opinion to get it fix.
I am also experiencing problems with my 3.3j wii. I played my games fine, but had not much time to play, so it collected the dust a bit. After 3-4 months, I opened the wii again, but it installed the 3.3j firmware (was not aware it was gonna wreck my wii) and then, from then on, nothing worked. I cant even put the firmware 1.9s (even if I burn it on verbatims DVD-RW! This pretty much upsets me, and I guess i'll have no choice but tu buy a new wii with a different chip then wiikey then?
I can't yet because my orignal japanese games are at a friend's house.
He is coming over this weekend, so I should be good to check this out this weekend.
Yes, you should try out both original and backup Jap games.
If your Jap Wii response to both original and backup Jap games, it means that your modchip is still alive. And if it doesn't response to any other NTSC-U or PAL games, it shows that the region free settings in the modchip has been turned off.
I understand the feeling of losing Wii and I hope this helps.
