PRESS RELEASE
June 30, 2008: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced new online gaming functionality for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3?), which will become available on July 2, 2008 with the 2.40 enhancement, an automatic firmware upgrade that delivers several of the features most requested by gamers. Combined with PLAYSTATION®Network?s unique service of free* online gaming, the enhancement makes PS3 an even more attractive platform of choice for the online gamer.
Firstly, the 2.40 enhancement allows XMB? (XrossMediaBar) access in-game. This means that you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller. With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing. While you can?t pause an online multiplayer game involving other people, you can rejoin play at any time when you?ve finished browsing. Along with these enhanced communications features, the Friends list capacity will double to 100 Friends.
2.40 also delivers trophies to recognise players? achievements in the online arena. Other competitive activities recognise winners with trophies ? so why not gaming on PS3? Many online games will have gold, silver and bronze trophies ? with platinum available for those who snag all three ? all displayed on the XMB for everyone to see.
Super Stardust? HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released last year, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer a variety of trophies**. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
? BUZZ!? Quiz TV
? LittleBigPlanet?
? MotorStorm? Pacific Rift
? NBA 09 - PS3
? PAIN**
? PixelJunk? Eden
? Resistance 2?
? SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
? Warhawk?**
The 2.40 enhancement is just one more reason to join PSN, the online network for PS3 users that lets you game online for free*. All you need to do to join is connect your PS3 to broadband and register, or go to the connection guide at Official PlayStation website: Country Selector to find out more.

I'm really happy that we didn't have to wait long after they confirmed that in-game XMB will be in 2.40.

It will be very handy, few times my headset went dead, so i had to quit game and change to the camera, this solves it, great stuff. ;-D

this is wicked and the trophys level up system might work
im going to say that its better then the xbox in-xmb which isnt really an xmb
and the ps3s looks so much easier to use. i could never get the hang ot the xbox one
imo it was a mess

It says the trophies system wont be retroactive which kinda sucks considering how much time i've spent on fifa08, COD4 etc and I'll have no trophies to show for it!
Oh well, hopefully fifa09 and COD5 will support it!

i agree i been waiting for this every since i had a PS3 so im with you man if it releases tonight around 12-1 o'clock then i am definitely staying up. i really hope that sony and the game developers will realease patches for trophies for the current games that we already own.

I agree that it sucks considering how many games I have beaten, but it makes perfect sense. Like the guy says in the video that I posted, if it was retroactive to everything you've done, what's to stop you from using someone else's saves etc. to boost your trophy count.

It wouldnt be a problem if more people would have some since of intergrity and not want to cheat or try to get over every chance they get. I actually wouldnt mind playing my games over again if it will bring diff rewards. Even if it is just an acknowledgment of acheiving certain goals.
Makes me regret getting rid of my old games I wouldnt play becuz newer ones were out and it would hvae jsut collected dust.

According to the guy in the Sony video, he said you must complete all your games again so that you'll get that pretty trophy. All your existing saves will not count towards the trophies. You better dust off those old games! lol

So it is possible for saves to be retroactive. We will see as time goes on.

I wonder if the games that were already on 360 will have trophies similar to the 360's achievements... It will be interesting to see.
