My friend modded my xbox for me about 2 years ago, but its dying. I tried to fix it, but there may be more problems than I can troubleshoot. So I won a nearly new one on ebay.

I have a couple of links I am using for a guide, but I remember hearing some stuff way back that I need clarified. I was able to crash the xbox into Linux with Splinter cell, but before I jump in I need these questions answered.

1. Does the version number matter, and why? The "new" xbox I got is a V1.1 (0b).

2. If I want to put in a larger hard drive, do I do that during the initial modding work, or do I do it after?

3. Would it be possible, or even a good idea, to copy my old xboxes modded hard drive to the new one bit for bit so I don't have to reconfigure everything? Or is it just better to run with the most recent software since my old software is over 2 years old?

Any suggestions or tips are welcome. Thanks in advance, and wish me luck!

1. Generally no, it does not. However, you will notice that in some tutorials it will say if "You have this Xbox version follow this tutorial"

2. You can, all you need is the EEPROM file, which can be extracted before you even mod the Xbox. All you need to do is load the Exploit screen, backup your EEPROM file, FTP into the Xbox, and then backup the EEPROM (which everyone should be doing). Then you follow a tutorial to upgrade the harddrive.

3. You should run with the most recent (better yet, stable) software since those have fixed bugs (if they're not stable, they might have new ones as well). For a big software bundle, download this after you have the Xbox modded:

Burn the ISO like you would normall burn an ISO.

Best of luck to you, and have fun modding.

Yeah, thats the only way you can do it, well theres another way, but it's a little too complicated, and it requires voiding your warranty (not like anyone has one), and playing with wires. So just do the FTP way.

Thanks for the info! I am about ready sit down and start the process.

I have one question as a matter of clarification. Above you said I need to back up the EEPROM, ftp into the xbox, then back up the EEPROM? Do you mean use the software in the modding prog to back up the EEPROM, then after I have ftp'ed in, transfer it to another computer as to back it up to another location for safe keeping?

You can use Filezilla FTP to FTP into the Xbox, and then search through were you saved it. You should keep it on your PC, and in a safe place. The reason you need to back it up is because if something goes wrong (it shouldn't), and the only way you can fix it is with XboxHDM, you need the EEPROM. You also need it if you want to upgrade the harddrive, or reformat it.

I am well on my way and everything has been relatively smooth! The only thing that went really screwy was the fact that I used those two tutorials I mentioned in my first post in order of mod, then upgrade hard drive. I should have done it the other way, because I modded the original hard drive for nothing. I jusy switched it out anyway, and modding the new hard drive was really easy after I did the first one.

Thanks for the help!

Warranty, oh that's when your xbox 360 rrods and you're too lazy to fix it right?

Least for us modders you'll never use the warranty of the original xbox, it's built like a tank and components are easy to replace. I have two xbox's that are unopened, well not for long.

Anyway, I have a modded C: floating around that you can just replace your C: with mine and your box will be modded with avalaunch & working ms dash. It's been used on over 60 xbox's (probably more) so far with no issues. You can either ftp it over or even build a new drive with xboxhdm with it as your C: (saves time when you're doing a lot of xbox's).

Let us know if you have any problems

Nice. i keep buying xboxes lately, every time i see a really cheap one i can't resist buying. I even have one of those Halo xboxes, brand new, though it's still in the original box, don't want to get it all dusty :)

While i'm here, here's some info re new Auto Installer releases, in case it helps (AID is now up to version 4.30) -
