This is due to Sony retracting the update due to the widespread issues that the new firmware has been causing. I for one am glad that I did not get the chance to do the update as I am on vacation.
Hope this gets fixed soon.

What problems are guys having with this update? I clocked my update/install. It was less than 5 minutes.

I haven't had a problem yet.

2.40 had a bug in it that caused some peoples PS3's to not install properly during the update process. And it caused a so called "Brick" to occur to the PS3 system. But it can be fixed if you hook the PS3's hdd up to your computer and format it.

Lol you can see it now,

"Bricked your PS3 after trying to install our latest update? No warranty? No worries! Just send it in to our repair centre and for a mear $150 we'll fix it for you"

Another great way for Sony to make more money out of its loyal customers. Sure as you;ve pointed out you can just format the hdd, but how many people out there are there that will think it's their PS3 that's messed up and not wanting to lose their PS3 send it in to repair and get cahrged $150 for something that was Sony's fault in the first place.

I'm not an Xbox fanboy, i've got all 3 playstations (and a broken PSP), but I feel Sony are just ripping us off with the PS3 and it's just not on!

I heard about the problems. I updated in the morning and my system has been working fine. Only problem that I had was the Uncharted demo froze twice. Just the game, not the system, I could hit the PS button and quit the game.
The update though is back online. I can see a 2.41 or something in that area coming soon.

I had no idea that this problem exists simply because I was playing without incident.

Apparently this was a big problem though: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstat...scending&page=1

From that official PS3 board, it was mostly original 60s. I have an original 20 from launch day. I don't have auto-start for the discs plus I'm connected wirelessly. The download and install took less than 5 minutes for me.

EDIT I was playing fine today before work. In fact, I beat MGS4. Anyone here that has played and beat the game, knows that you'll be running the game for close to 2 hours after the final battle. Everything went off without a hitch.

I did notice that accessing the in-game XMB was a little clunky-for lack of a better term. It wasn't as "smooth" as it would be if you were back on the home screen. However, I had absolutely no issues with this update, nor any issues during playback. I actually went through each part of the XMB while in game (music, video, friends list, etc.). Everything worked.

I haven't had that problem yet. Then again, I did have my demos freeze up on me. I haven't played MGS4 yet. I heard though that taking out your HD, formatting it with a computer and poping it back into the PS3 solves these issues. Or if you can format it through the PS3. It does sound like when Sony took the update down it caused some PS3's to install it half way or in a corrupted fashion.

Just turn the off switch in the back off then on again while holding the power button down in the front the whole time...then the PS3 should reebot it self and ask you to format the HDD....

I think thats how you fix a brick Im not sure tho.

PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

Or format the HD in a computer. I think though you should call Sony and talk to their head rep and point them in the direction of all these threads telling them that the reason your system doesn't work is because of them.
