Got 2.36 I tried updating to 2.40 but it says latest fw is installed. Thats because according to many people, 2.40 has been freezing PS3 consoles after or during the updates. 3/5 of PS3's have reported this problem (20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB). Sony will ready 2.41 soon.
It's kind of funny actually, I knew it would get delayed somehow.

could it have been the amount of traffic that caused the freezing?

you cannot go back to an older FW once you have upgraded.
I also upgraded yesterday, and apart from the lag when using the in game XMB haven't had any problems so far.

You can still get it. I have it on a memory stick. ps3hax.net has it available for download. If you update from memory stick or usb stick then the "black screen of death" problem doesn't occur.

I wouldn't update till they fixed the bugs, wouldn't want to end up with a brick.

The problem can be solved by taking the HDD and connect it ti a PC then format it, but you'll lose your saved data though.

Its fixable but loosing all your data is no minor blow, we've just gotta be patient, they'll have it patched in a week or two.

I updated to 2.40 on wednesday before the update ws pulled. Played for about an hour and didnt have any problmes any problems, but haven't had chance to play since. Is it best not to play until a new update is released, or am i safe now i have updated without problems??

If your update has been installed successfully then you have nothing to worry about.

I want to know why only some PS3's experienced this problem. You would think that if one PS3 ran the update and got the black screen of death, then all PS3's would have gotten the black screen of death from the update since it's all the same update. I mean, I don't think all of the updates were different.
And I could also understand this if it was just one certain model that this happened to. Such as just the 80gigs or just the 60gigs or whatever. But this problem happened to all versions of the PS3.

I'm still going strong after downloading the update about 10 minutes after it was released. I've played through about 6 different games and have had no problems.

Thanks, No thats cool, I pretty much have everything I need to format the hard drive on my pc if I need to. Plus all my games saves are backed up on a memory stick cuz I just recently had to exchanged my 40g for another one cuz it stopped playing disks all together. right after it locking up with playing that spiderman3 blueray that came with the ps3.
