I want to get a d2Pro clip like the one shown here, but I want to be able to tell that my Wii has the right chipset (and I don't have the right screwdrive to open it up yet). If I gave the first few characters of the serial number could someone tell me?
There is a 50% chance that your drive chip is a GC2-D2C.
So does that mean it's D2C? Or D2C2? Does it even matter, since I think the D2Pro works on them both?
There is a 50% chance that the pins on your drive chip are not cut.
What does that mean?
Also, I heard about the D2Prog, which is an easy way to help me update the modchip. But they talk about a flat cable that isn't included. I'd like to update my chip this way (since burning DVDs is annoying, and then I'd just throw them away) but will the D2Pro clip come with a flat cable? If not, can I get one elsewhere?

It means it's either D2C or D2B.
D2Pro (v1) only works on D2C
D2Pro (v2) works on D2C and D2C2

It means that there's a 50% chance that there are 3 legs chopped on your drive (in an attempt to defeat modders). In reality it's a restatement of the first statement - since only D2B are cut and not D2C/D2C2...
Now go buy a Philips #000 & a triwing and open it - it's the only sure way to tell (since you might have one with a refurbished drive which may not tally with the serial number).

The refurbished HD seems unlikely since I bought it new. But we shall see.
From what I understand it sounds like I can't go wrong if I buy the D2Pro v2 (9 wire). Think I'm going to get the clip, because soldering it on has the potential for so much to go wrong (and I am not about to ruin either the Wii or the chip due to my own clumsiness).
I still have the question about the chip updater. Can anyone tell me where to get the D2Prog (and whether a clipped D2Pro will come with a cable to connect to it)?
Finally, I have some questions as to the legitimacy of a couple of other Wii items I saw: the USB network adapter and, more interestingly, the HDPro S-Video cable here. How does this work? Is it a simple upscale? That seems unlikely, given that a TV can do that anyways. The Wii was never touted as supporting High Definition of any kind, so what the hell is this cable going to do to change that?

It's perfectly possible - faulty Wii gets taken off the production line and refitted with a new DVD drive - that sort of scenario - since it never left the factory it's new as far as retail market is concerned....

My thoughts exactly :)

That's for people who only have (or want) wired LAN

It's an SVideo cable it'll do SD - better than composite but not as good as component (or SCART/Peritel if you live in Europe)
