I've got a US NTSC wii with a d2pro and 3.3u firmware (updated via internet).

It plays game disks that I got when I was in Korea (dvd -r) but I can't get it to play the disks that I burn. It gives me the big ? and doesn't recognize the disk. I've tried several different games, 2 different DVD burners/computers, and 3 kinds of disks (Sony + and - R, and Verbatim +R). I've used WUM and BBer to make sure I've got the right region and patch it if not.

I've read all the guides I can find but they're pretty limited on troubleshooting info. Everything I've found basically says "burn the img with imgburn then play" -end. That's not working for me so I could use a little advice.

Should I keep trying different media? Should I try different burning software even though imgburn works for so many?

ImgBurn and verbatim should work fine so thats not the problem.

If you are altering the iso file and resigning then they will not work with 3.3

Also, don't suppose you have parental controls turned on accidentally.

No, I double checked the parental controls. What do you mean altering and resigning? Does that mean that you can't patch an iso to work on a different region or remove the update from the iso?

Thanks for the response.

yep, if you patch an iso you have to trucha sign it to get it to work, this has been stopped with the 3.3 update.

I also have an NTSC wii with 3.3u and a D2Pro9. I played Top Spin 3 (PAL) and it asked to update. I then used Brickblocker 1.3R2 and patched the iso. It loads and plays fine with no update message. Does Brickblocker not sign the disks? I tried this with Battalion wars2 and PES 2008 and neither worked.

So straight NTSC copies should burn and play fine still right?

WiiBrickBlocker and Region patcher's are not effected by the new 3.3 firmware. Not all games are compatible with Wii BrickBlocker so keep that in mind.

Burn with ImgBurn at 4X. If you burn to slow or to fast this can cause issues. A safe speed to burn at is 4X. I would stick with DVD-R Verbatim/Tayio Yuden. If you use DVD+R media and your burner can booktype then booktype the media to DVD-ROM.

Have you updated the D2Pro with latest firmware? I know most firmware updates usually include a better compatibility for blank media.

Nah, I don't have the cable to for the chip so it's still w/ever version it came with.

I've got this working now though. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong. I think it was probably bad .iso files. At first I was having a problem finding any NTSC images so I was messing around trying to convert PALs, I expect that's where the problem was. Once I got ahold of some NTSC versions = no problems.

Thanks for the responses

Just to include some info
I put this in this section as yes my Wii playered some backups but not others

I had some backups of gamecube and wii games laying around for year or so waiting for the day I chipped my Wii.
Now that day has come and I have chipped it.
My backup of Mario Power tennis (great game) was only loading sometimes and seemed to load more often if kept the GC controller unplugged till it had to be used, maybe a coincedence. Plus the 2 wii backups were terrible, loaded once out of 10 to the title screen and the other never loaded. Various media including were TDK, made another copy on some HP lightscribe, plus another on new TDK just using inbuilt program on laptop, Sonic, and they are all perfect, have not missed a beat.
So this raises some questions.
Was my old burner lame?
Was my old burning program crappy? its nero and I have always loved it!
Was my old media a dud?
Did my old discs lose their quality in the last year?
Does the Wii have a really weak DVD reader built in?
Any answer to above may also answer why Wwii plays some and not others
