I recently hooked up an old JVC surround sound system to my ps3 via optical. I'm going through my library playing some old games and I discovered that i get no audio what so ever from NHL 08. all the menus and the actual game play is totally silent. I tried every setting on the ps3 as well as my receiver but i cannot get sound, other games & blu-rays function perfectly. Any Suggestions?

How are you connected to the PS3? HDMI? If so, then the PS3 is probably "optimized" thus your audio will be channeled through the HDMI cable (and into whatever it's plugged into [most likely the TV]).
If you wanna use the HDMI video settings PLUS the optical audio cable into a receiver (exactly like my setup), you have to adjust the audio settings from the XMB. I think the tab is called "audio settings" or something like that. Go in there and check off how you want the audio connected. In this case, optical audio cable.
When I first received an optical audio cable, I said the same thing, "WTF?!" Then I realized the PS3 is using the HDMI cable for audio as well, which goes to my TV, which I never use for audio.

Mr_Pink:
I am connected via HDMI, i changed the audio settings to Optical through the xmb. I get sound from all other games, blu-rays, and mp3s. It seems that it is only one game in particular. I've watched several Blu-Rays with surround sound no problem. When launching NHL 08 i get zero sound. I had to switch my sound back to HDMI to play the game through the tv. I wanted to know if there is something i can do or the game doesnt support the sound setup? Not sure why it is only one game? Thanks in advance

I have tried everything I could, and switching back to HDMI sound is a pain since my surround sound does not have hdmi. I hope this will not happen on NHL09. Anyone else have this problem or is it my game?

I have just rented BURNOUT PARADISE. Same thing happens, no Audio. I get audio when i highlight the disc and the background appears, but when i start the game, nothing - total silence. I've notice that these are both EA games. Anyone else experience this or know why. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Under the optical settings, have you highlighted ALL of the sound options like aac ac3 etc? i'd try a bit of trial and error with these.

Smoggie:
I have tried all the settings there possibly is.
I ran through all the settings on the PS3 and my receiver.
It looks like it is some type of encoding with EA games?
I get sound to my tv when I switch to HDMI, but its not 5.1.
Is EA or anyone else aware of this issue, if you have an EA game, and a Optical to 5.1 setting, could you try yours and see if there is sound?

I remember playing the NHL series for the PS2, the later games were encoded with DTS surround sound... which was sweet! Check to see if you two EA games have DTS surround, also your "old" JVC system might not have DTS capabilities. If it does you might need to configure the sound in the individual game settings.

Thanks Odin
I figured it out,
I needed to disable only the DTS setting on the playstation.
My receiver must not support DTS so when i disable it i get dolby surround sound.
Thanks everyone!
