Hey i have a fat ps2 (no adapter,no hd) and action replay max and 2 8mb sony memory cards. I just want to play burned ps2 games and some emulators for the ps2. I just have a few questions
1.To softmod my ps2 do i need the action replay memory card or will a 8mb sony work fine?
2.Should i just buy swap magic? or is there a .elf that works like swap magic?
3.Should i buy a flip top cover instead of using a swap tool?
4.How big are ps2 game backups and should i use dvd-r or will a 700 mb cd-r be big enough to hold a ps2 game?

PS.Im also looking for the cheapest way to do all this..lol

It's best to confirm exactly which version of the ps2 you have if you are interested in the ps2 scene. Try this site for information on that: http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm

This tutorial is perfect for you if your ARmax allows USB drive access.

Once you get the exploit running, you can use the elf called cogswap loader that does what swap magic does, essentially. A nearly comprehensive and updated list of elfs can be found at http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=ps2.html

No. There is no need to buy anything like that. The launcher I recommend you use is uLaunchElf once you get the exploit running - this utility has an option for disc control which stops the disc in the drive, making disc swapping safe and simple once you get the hang of it

Ps2 Iso's, even optimized, are between 1.9 GB and 4.7 GB if the game is single layer. Some games, such as God of War, are dual-layer, meaning it is a full 9 GB. I really suggest you get a network adapter and hard drive. Hdds make everything phenomenally easier. You can backup and store your memory card data, run emulators off hdd and store roms on disk, and hdloader is very simple to use. If you are interested, I can give you more links.

While the hard drive option is convenient, an 80GB hard drive will cost you $40 and a network adapter can cost between $15 and $40, depending on whether you get it used at Gamestop or used from Amazon or eBay. So that may not be the cheapest way, but it's awfully nice.

Good luck to you. I'll check back regularly if you have any questions.

You're welcome.

You're gonna need a factory pressed ps1 disc - burned discs can only be used once the exploit is launched.

Factory pressed means it's an original game [not bootleg]. Without one, you can't launch the exploit. Gamestop has used ps1 games, and many of the more forgettable titles are very cheap.

They are too big for a CD-R, unfortunately.

Okay where can i buy a network adapter thats not too expensive because i've been googling and most are about $40 and with a hard drive thats $80 - way too much money to spend on my ps2. Do you happen to have a extra one lying around that u can sell me?

Unfortunately not in both cases. I only have the hard drives I need for storage now days. And my old network adapter's ide interface died, so I bought another used one from gamestop.

Here's what I did. Go to gamestop.com and use the store locator and call the ones closest to you until you find one with a network adapter. They are $14.99. I had to drive 35 minutes to get it though, as I found one at the 17th place I called. Hard drives don't have to be huge to be useful. I have an 80 GB, which I got for $40. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148236

Even a 40 or 60 GB drive would be a good size.

Try pricegrabber and other online retailers for cheaper prices. Be sure to check http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list before making a purchase to ensure that the drive works with the ps2 [albeit most do]. Avoid Western Digital drives, as their size requires hardware modification on the network adapter.

How many games can a 20gb or 40gb drive hold?

A 20 GB can only hold 5 games max at once, and a 40 GB drive can probably hold about 10-12 games. You may want to partition the drive for storing SNES, NES, Genesis, and other console roms, which can take up hard drive space. Definitely get a drive at least 40 GB and up.

There is no n64 emulator for the ps2 - i imagine it would be extremely unstable if it were coded. The ps2 just doesn't have that kind of power. However, SNES Station is a very good port of the top-notch Snes9x SNES emulator, and FCE Ultra has been ported and works absolutely perfectly on the PS2. PGen, a Sega Genesis emulator, is also a winner. I have had some trouble with InfoGB, a Gameboy emulator, however. You can find elf's of these all on sksapps.com

Since I have a wireless router in my house, I don't use the internet much on my ps2. However, I have heard that there is official sony software called Central Station. It can play flash videos, supposedly, which is what YouTube streams. It could be on your Network Adapter disc. Other than that, I don't know where to find it.
