I have instaled the wiikey and checked all connections which are perfect.the chipset is a d2b with no pins cut and all solder points as they should.
When i put in a confirmed working backup i get the unable to read disc screen.
Tried the config and update discs but also get the unable to read disc screen.
It is a pal wii.
I have read lots of stuff on here but im getting bogged down with info overload.
I dont have a GC controller so can i do without it

It looks like there is a bridge right there. Or maybe it's just the angle. Are you sure the pins are not cut? I can't tell.

ok i must have burned 10 different update config discs now and they still wont boot!!
I know they are fine because they work on my wii as gamecube discs,my wii has the d2ckey.
Also i am now thinking it could be an oddball wii drive that just doesnt like the dvd-r's i am using so i tried a verbatium dvd-rw this morning to no avail!
have a different brand burning now so i'll update on that later.

The instal cant be faulted however if i cant get a dvd to boot then it could be possible that the wiikey is the problem after all....

DVD-RW most probably won't work. If you are 100% confident of your install then it looks as if you have a bad WiiKey.

It all points to it being a bad wiikey because i've used countless media for backups and there is no way the wii could be that pricky about the dvd's.
I'm left with the delemia that removing the chip will wreck the wii!!If i do remove the chip, what happens if the pads lift off the board???
