I recently bought an HDTV, and everything is been great so far, though I'm a bit confused about the Wii and 16:9.

When I set up my 360 to widescreen(in the main menu) and have my TV's display mode to "auto detect" it detects it as 1080p, 16:9, which is good.

However when I use my Wii(connected with component cables) and have it set to 16:9 on the main menu(and in games) the "auto detect" detects it as 480p, 4:3(and displays it with black boarders on the sides and shows a 16:9 image stretched into a 4:3 viewing field).

So is the Wii capable of displaying an actual 16:9 picture? Am I doing something wrong in setting it up? Or is it this anamorphic 16:9 display I've been seeing on sites with the Wii's output capabilities?(meaning I need to set the Wii to 16:9, then force my TV to stretch the 4:3 viewing field that gets outputted into a 16:9 viewing field).

The wii defiantly supports 16:9 without stretching. I'm sure because I've brought my wii to a friend's house with a widescreen TV on several occasions. However he was the one who set it to work so I dont know exactly what setting he changed to make it work.

It is and it isn't technically stretching what I'm doing. Think of how when you had a 4:3 TV, and if you set something to widescreen it would squeeze it vertically. So a horizontal stretch would fix that. That is what I currently have to do. It looks fine, I'm just confused as to why I have to do that for my Wii when it is set to 16:9, while other devices set to 16:9 don't require me to force the 16:9 ratio to make it look proper.

The highest the Wii supports is 480p, basically DVD quality. It can only do 16:9 by stretching thew 480p like is done with DVDs. As long as you have component cables.

But yes, it does support "widescreen", you just don't get the higher resolution like 720p, 1080I or 1080P. Works just fine in 480P mode on my LCD HDTV. The PS3 of course looks a hell of a lot better.

are you changing it to 480p AND widescreen?

don't let the tv auto-detect.

Yeah its on both 480p and widescreen. yes i'm using component. Visually there is nothing wrong, just though it odd that the Wii has kind of a 'mock' 16:9 instead of actual 16:9(or is that just a limit of the 480(i and p) outputs?)

it doesn't have a mock widescreen resolution. my wii is displaying 480p widescreen perfectly on a 42" LG lcd widescreen tv.

Hi! Did you changed you widescreen settings in the wii settings? I am also using an HDTV, and it works perfectly. I believe that you have not yet configured your widescreen settings yet. To configure your display to 16:9, you must go to wii settings and look for widescreen setting, then select 16:9 instead of 4:3.

I hope this will solve your problem!
