Here's some data from the site, if it helps you guys :)
www.blankmedia.ca

"Ritek dvd-r 4x with a frosted top and dark purple bottom. These are a new batch of G04. These are not Ridata branded but also come factory sealed in bundles of 50 pcs. They are true Ritek media and come direct from Ritek but are unbranded."

Format: bulk packaging in 50 pcs
Media Code Mfr: RITEKG04
Formatted Size: Blank
Total Size: 4.7GB
Book Type: DVD-R
Media Type: V2.2 DVD-R
Media Code Id: Unknown
Write Strategy Speed: 4.0x 5540KBs
Current Drive Speed: 4.0x 5540KBs
Default Rotation: CLV
Linear Density: 0.267um/bit
Layers: 1

Media Code:
00 6C 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 76 0E 14 .l...@....R..v.. 88 9A 80 00 03 52 49 54 45 4B 47 00 04 30 34 00 .....RITEKG..04. 00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 06 08 12 11 ................ 86 67 80 00 07 88 80 00 00 00 00 00 08 05 1B 0E .g..............

Above, what does ".. are not Ridata branded.. are unbranded.." mean? Is this not desireable for some reason? And as I hear, darker bottoms, such as these, are easier for the ps2 to read?

Also, I've seen some Ritek being sold that have the tag "Ritek/RiData." What exactly does this mean?

For instance, www.banzaicracker.com/catalog is selling:

"Ritek/RiDATA DVD-R 4.7GB, 1X/2X, $1.30ea., 100-Pack
$125.00"

All prices Canadian!

Thanks, appreciated :O

According to Conrexx, who are the sole distributor of Ritek media in Europe, there is no silver topped disc that comes direct from their factories, therefore it is an overprint at best. It could still be a quality disc, better than a princo, but there is no way to know without trying it :D

Could it be that this is because Conrexx is in Europe, and the website selling the silver topped Cd's is Canadian? Also, what exactly is "overprinted?"
Thanks!

It could be a Euroopean thing, but i doubt it. I know the disc you are reffering to, i think, as i enquired about it myself with conrexx as it is available here. An overprint is someone who purchases a plain Ritek disc and prints their own top on it, in this case the silver top. It doesnt necessarilly mean its a less quality disc, its just generally overprints are associated with lower grade media, though not always.

The RitekG03's I use have a plain matte silver top (they do not appear overprinted). They came wrapped in the red and white Ridata shrink and say Ridata on the hub. They do have bumpy edges.

I saw these same discs at a good price on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11161&item=2784244308

But i'm a little hesitant to buy them because i don't know if they would be compatible with my LG DVD Player.

The first DVD-R's that i bought were Aterra and while they worked on my PS2 and DVD ROM, they didn't play on my DVD Player.

Lately, i've been using TDK branded discs and they work great even though they're a little pricey.

So would anyone know if these (or any other) Ritek discs are compatible with most DVD players?

Thanks!

That's a tough one. Have you tried any friend's burns in your player? It may just be your player. The ps2 is usually the tough one. Here in the USA many retailers offer 'Sample Packs' that include a few different brands for testing. Most important you need a brand that matches well with your burner (one size does not fit all).

The Aterra's are made by Fornex I believe, no one I've heard of. A program like Nero CD/DVD Speed will help ID the actual maker of the disc as well as provide a way to test the quality of your burns using the Transfer Rate test.

Yeah, i've tried my cousin's back-up's and they were some obscure brand of DVD's which also work ok.

I just bought my DVD Writer last week (Pioneer107 8X) so i'm still new to all of this.
But i heard that Ritek discs are quite compatible with Pioneer DVD Burners.

I just got an email from the ebay seller and he said the discs are compatible with LG DVD Players, so i'll probably just take the gamble and buy them.

In regards to Meritline, there have been many complaints on various forums. Things like bait and switch and no after the sale support if you have a problem. They seem to push BeALL (one of the few vendors who carry them), but there were quite a few negative reviews on their own site, usually concerning consistancy (those reviews appear to have vanished which is also a Meritline complaint).

Ritek (Ridata) is probably the best choice when it comes to price/performance. On all forums they get positive feedback. To add to the confusion though, there is also the "Grade A" term that Meritline (and others) use. If you notice on their site the regular G04's say 'Grade A", but the ones you chose do not. What does this mean? I have no idea and comments from others will vary.

I bought a 50 pack spindle from Meritline of G03 Grade A's (matte silver finish). The edges where noticably bumpy. Some Verbatims that I had bought locally at Sam's Club, that also id as G03's, had very clean edges. When people do complain of problems it always seems to be the discs at the bottom of the stack, so start with those. If those burn right you should be good to go. To me, I like to see a clean/read burn in Nero CD Speed. If it looks like this (this is a G04, the G03's look the same)I know I probably will have no problems and the media matches well with my burner.
