Hey Guys,
I currently have an xbox 360 with a samsung drive, for some reason it won't read disks i've cleaned the laser, put the board onto another samsung drive chasis with the same specs and it still won't read the disks correctly.
My question is can i change boards on the original dvd drive? I have the same spare samsung drive which i know works in another xbox. is there a way i can take that drive and insert it into the other xbox? Would this require me getting the security key from the original drive and puting it into the other samsung drive? if so how do i go about that? Thanks.

You will need the key from your original board in order to replace it.Look for the textbook that covers flashing almost all the drives.It is supplied on most sites probably somewhere on here as well.If things don't work out like you plan the best option is to buy another drive,but all methods including replacing the mobos in drives requires the original key.

Okay so replace the key in the new board with the old...does this carry the same risk for being banned from xbox live?

It doesn't have any risks unless you use hacked firmware such as Ixtreme or anything like that.If you use the original firmware and your original key there are no risks.You will be able to play online as much as you want without having to worry about being banned.Another suggestion I can make is desoldering the TSOP chip from your original board and soldering it back on a new board,but its not as easy as it sounds.The easiest method is to extract your key and inject it into an original firmware then flash that to a different board.

If you're just swapping boards, you don't need to mess with the key. It's already on there.
It doesn't make any sence to get the key from the old board, put the old board in a new drive, and flash the same key back on.

No i know that wouldn't make sense. I'm taking the new board and putting it in the different xbox 360. Therefore i would need to get the key off of the old drive board and somehow put it in the new board? That is how i interpreted it.

I read that as you want to take the second dvd drive and put it in the 360 which is giving you problems now. But you're saying that you want to use the 2nd 360 instead? And if that's so, then the only purpose of swapping boards would be because you have the first board flashed, which you never mentioned.

Alright sorry for making that more confusing that it should have been....
What I want to do... I have One xbox (not two xboxs) with a bad dvd drive board.... I have a spare dvd drive same make and model as the bad one....Can i take the spare dvd drive board and insert it into the xbox....Also...neither board has been flashed...

The answer is yes you can swap the dvd drive boards,but since your original board is messed up you need the key from it for the board you want to swap it out with.The problem is the key has to match your main motherboard in order for it to work.If you have a different drive your key is not already on it,so it requires your specific key for your system to recognise it.Flashing your key is required anytime you want to change out a different dvd drive mobo or replacing the whole drive,unless your original dvd drive board is in good shape then you could swap that out into a new dvd drive.I'm assuming this isn't the case though,because it sounds like your original drive mobo is the problem from my understanding.

Correct the dvd drive board is bad, so i will have to extract the key from my main board and then insert it into the spare board....What program is easiest to do this with?

Many use iprep. A new version was just released. I believe it's 007. Myself... I prefer to just stick with the simple mtkflash command. Either way will work.

Nevermind bhetrick posted first,but yeah use iPrep and a VIA SATA chipset that is compatible with your drive.

To use Mtkflash i can use a usb right? The tutorials i've seen are all using floppy drives and since i have a newer computer i didn't bother buying a floppy.

BH- this is a really newb question, but how do i make the usb bootable? I don't just copy the mtkflash files onto the drive and then try to boot to it do i?

Hey BH,
In order to use mtkflash i have read that i need to patch it with my sata information..I read that using a hex editor is the best way. Well when i go to my information and look at the components it comes up with a bunch of crap..

why is this hard? I have an old machine set up with a small fat32 partition which contains dos (bootable) mtkflash.exe x360sam.exe and whatever firmware I want to patch to flash..(xp leaves a chunk of the hdd unused.. this is a great use for it).. install something called "grub" to your MBR and you will have the option to boot into dos any time you want to flash. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot...B-for-DOS.shtml The mobo I use doesn't support booting from usb, as lots don't.
First boot dos, then read the xbox drive.
mtkflash r /m orig.bin
then patch the new firmware
x360sam.exe orig.bin extremewhateveritis.bin a52a.bin
(I use that because it always works.. you can flash your old key to your new firmware by renaming the orig.bin file you read off the drive.. you know what I mean.. treat changing the key in a factory firmware just like a hacked one ;))
then write the new firmware to the drive
mtkflash.exe w /m a52a.bin
and it's that simple.. the timing for the 10 second trick is a little picky on the ms28 drives but it does work.. on my mobo combination it's more like 3 beats than 10 seconds.
That mobo may work for the first flash of a ms25 drive.. I have done a couple on that chipset, but if you have problems then buy the much advertised via card. I haven't had to piss about at all with patching the flashing program which came with a heap of firmwares.
Getting the via card may be the best way to go.. it could even be possible to recover your so called dead board. I bought a stack of bad flashed and supposedly dead samsung drives off ebay and recovered around 80% of them using this method.

i understand all that...I'm wondering what mtkflash i need to download in order to use it on my ms25 drives...Do i need to hex edit the mtkflash program to my mobo...that's what i'm confused about...once i get mtkflash to work that's all i have left to worry about...i'm running vista as well so some of the little apps don't work correctly...
