Top Spin III partial brick

So one of my customers went ahead and partial bricked his wii with Top Spin III. (Even after being warned NOT to do the updates on PAL games...ugh, some people) Anyone know which firmware version is on Top Spin? Also I remember reading about a stand alone firmware update disc for the wii, any truth to this?

It didnt ask me to update as I run a PAL disc on Pal WII, and as I have the 3.2 firmware, it's probably 3.2 (in case it does which im almost sure it doesnt).
I rememener using NTSC version of Speed Racer on my WII and it asked me to update (while the pal version didnt). So I updated and it didnt brick my WII.
