I have a Samsung Plasma with a vga input with 3.5mm sound cable input. I recently purchased a 50 ft. vga cable with attached 3.5mm sound cable. I have a Dell LCD monitor with dvi and vga inputs, I currently have the dvi cable run to my monitor from my pc and my pc has a Dvi and vga output on the motherboard, but you can only use one or the other as you already know. I don't have a problem using the vga input on the monitor.
I was wondering what is my best route to take. I read that there is signal loss with just using a vga splitter especially the distance I am running it. I also read that a vga to vga/dvi splitter doesn't work. I was thinking of purchasing a 2-Way SVGA VGA Splitter Amplifier Multiplier 400 MHz with Audio. Or should I just go with a manual data switch?
I think I see where you are going with this, the reason I'm going with vga is the price. A hdmi cable or dvi cable are no less than double the price of the vga. I got 50 ft. of vga for under 26 bucks.
Cable length is a killer. I use to do what you are talking about. I have a dual monitor video card on my PC, and was using my TV as a movie viewer only.
If you just want to watch movies on your TV, you could try a different approach, and stream your video to your TV. This way, you can go as long as you want, and your cost would be less. (So you know, you CAN stream HD video with AC3)
If you want to use your TV as a computer monitor, I would try to move the computer closer to the TV.
