It would seem you did something incorrectly when you installed the clip. Are you sure you have fitted it correctly, you have to press fairly hard. Maybe you disturbed something when fitting it, its hard to say.

Its one of the reasons why I think clips are a terrible idea, they cause so many problems compared to hard soldered installs.

ok the wii is accepting disks now but it still wont read backups my media is sony DVD+R and i've tried Maxell DVD+RW burning with nero burning rom on 4x, should i try magic iso? also the clip doesnt seem to hold on VERY tight, should i move the point a bit outwards so it does on the clip?

You can't have read anything here about how to solve your problem or you would have seen the hundreds of threads that say to use ImgBurn at 4x to burn discs and verbatim media.

Also as I understand it the clip should be very tight, thats why you have to push so hard to get it to go on properly, but having never put one myself, I have no experience as to just how tight it is.

Yeah I'd have to agree and definantly say your install sounds incorrect. Or you have a bad chip. It should be reading backups if everything was properly fitted. And like GGbarnum said you should be using Imgburn.

The wiiclip will make a snapping sound when pressed firmly onto the chip. There shouldn't be any visible gaps between the clip and the chip. If you didn't hear the snapping noise then its not on correctly. Also DO NOT PRESS HARD ON THE CLIP. Firmly yes but not forcefully. Get Verbatims or Memorex disks (i use the DVD-R's)and use imageburn to burn them at 4x. If you do this you shouldn't encounter any issues with playing your backups.
