Hi all, was hoping someone could please help me with this problem. I have the original 20 gb japanese PS3 and a few months ago it would freeze; often with pixels appearing over the screen first.

When I turned the switch on and off my TV would read NO SIGNAL for a while and I would have to eventually reprogram the PS3 to my TV after around 30 minutes.

I also noticed that I would get a scan line running up my screen after it worked again every minute or so and it would freeze again after 10 minutes to an hour.

I moved my PS3 away from any nearby items and it seemed to work; although this was around the same time as a system update, so I'm not sure what the real fix was.

However, recently it has started happening again; I have kept my console free from any obstructions and installed update 2.41.

The original problem happened when watching LOST season 3 and some other blu rays and it is happening now with Metal Gear Solid 4. Don't know if the discs have anything to do with it but I doubt it.

Does anyone have this same problems or symptoms? Is it an overheating or system problem? Will an intercooler fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as my warranty has long expired. Cheers

Try reseting it by holding down the power button or runing a full format on the HD. It actually seems like the hard drive is bad. You could try replacing those components or Sony would fix it for $190 I believe if its out of warranty. Gamestop might give you some $ to trade it in and you could buy a 40GB. You lose B/c though but gain wifi.

Cheers. Do you know if there is a way to back up the hard drive first, cause I've bought a lot of stuff that's saved. And is there a way to buy a bigger hard drive, like the Xbox 360?

Thanks for the help

You can back it up but only your videos and music. For everything that you have bought, you'll have to redownload that from the PlayStation Store after logging into your account and going to My Downloads. It'll be a free download, it'll see that you have bought the things and let you download it for free again.

Okay, I tried the reboot (3 beeps) and thought that sorted it, but it only stop the scan lines and it still crashed (with pixels).

I then backed up my saved files and stuff I needed onto USB drive and tried a full format, it stalled at 14 percent and I had to turn it off and it did a quick format.

It is still stalling, anymore ideas please?

Since the format stalled at 14%, it means that the hard drive is bad. You'll need to replace it with any laptop SATA drive.
These are the cheapest ones I found on http://www.newegg.com
60GB SATA 1.5 Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136121

80GB SATA 3.0 GB/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149082

This should fix the problem, unless there is more wrong than just the hard drive being bad.

The reason it completed a quick format successfully is because a quick format formats the beginning and end of the drive only, your drive is bad somewhere in the middle.

Cheers for the link and info. Gonna get the 60gb one and hope that helps.

Although I think the stalling at 14 percent was just random, cause it freezes at various times after being turned on; sometimes after a couple of mins, other times it can last half an hour or so.

I haven't heard of anyone having the same problem really, so it's frustrating?

Since it freezes at random points it makes me think that the HD isn't bad after all. Does the system get hot?
Try running the fan test. Don't worry, it'll sound like a jet engine or *cough360cough* for a bit while running the test.

freezing at random points? Have you tried doing a full restore after doing the quick yet? Also consider getting yourself a can of air and 'blowing out' any dust build up, can't hurt to makesure you don't have any dirt build up that is preventing air flow. If you did put in the new HDD make sure you got that sucker properly seated. If it isn't it could be what is causing this problem to reoccur.

The "Fan Test" link I posted above will clean out the dust from the fans.

Every time I try a full format or restore it freezes mid way. Also I couldn't get the fan test running, it only went a bit louder.

Also I always seem to have to hold down the power button for the second beep to reprogram the PS3 with my TV, so could it be an HDMI or connection problem.

Cheers for all the help folks, this has been a nightmare. Broken PS3, Xbox 360, PC, phone and car over the space of a wekk.

Give a new HD a try or format it in a PC, see how that goes. Sony will fix your current system for $190 out of warranty.

I emailed a local place who said they'd may be able to fix it for £70 if it was and HD or system problem.

Could someone post a link or instructions on how to format the PS3 hard drive externally on a PC please.

Sorry to be a pest, appreciate all the help folks, cheers.

Well first off, you'll need a computer or laptop with a SATA hard drive or port inside.

It'll look like something like this:

or if your laptop has a SATA drive

And your not being a pest. My job as a Senior Member on AD is to help until the problem is solved or until I am out of answers.

Thanks, appreciate it.

Pretty sure my PC has a SATA slot, so I will put my PS3 drive in over the weekend, format it and report back on it's success. Cheers

To format it, format it through Windows. First delete the partition and then do a full format to FAT32.

wait a minute... if heard this problem correctly he's saying that the PS3 won't format the drive, right? Although FAT32 is the correct format, he's may run into an issue... if I'm not mistaken the HDD on ANY PS3 gives the option of installing another OS, my 60 GB does. I'm not saying it won't work, but make sure its not a primary partition format type. You don't want ANY master boot records on it.

IF it won't do a full reformat then it may not matter at what is done with the HDD he's trying to use for a replacement. I'm not sure, but he may need to see if there's a manual push pin switch on that mobo. It would be similar to one you could find on a mac that you could use to reset the computer entirely, it looks like a 1/4 in. by 1/4 in. square w/ a black button. The fun part is that you may need to have it hooked to a screen IF such a piece exists on the main board. If I'm not mistaken... all that the PS3 is using that HDD for is what we would use a jump drive aka, flash drive for; data storage. IT has no OS on it at all, which is both the most brilliant, but hair tearing out stunt I've ever seen Sony do to date!

One other thing, this may sound odd, but any point have you had your PS3 on your network at all while doing any of this? As corny as this may sound try seeing if there's a firmware fix/ update. Now that I think about it dvd burners need to be updated every once in awhile in order to use media because the companies change their printing encoding, and thus could give you a bad burn on a disc if its not... this a complete guess at best, so take for what its worth, but to me the symptoms sound somewhat identical.

Thanks again folks for the help.

So just to clarify:

Will I first try to get a firmware fix --- is this the same as a system update or is there a certain place I download this from?

Failing that, should I then remove the hard drive from my PS3, connect it to my PC's SATA port and do a full format --- is this by right clicking the drive in My Computer and clciking on format?

After I've done that will I try to find a black button on my PS3 mother board that will reset it?

Sorry for my slowness folks, cheers.

Yea, go for it. For formatting the drive though, you have to do it through Device Manager or through a Windows Boot Disc. If you do it through the Windows Boot Disc, the best way I believe, BE SURE TO UNPLUG YOUR XP DRIVE FIRST! You don't want to format the wrong drive by mistake.

Was about to take out my PS3 hard drive and found out that none of my screwdrivers fitted ha, so will leave that part til tomorrow. (although I fixed my 360 in the meanwhile and ordered X clamp replacment just in case).

In the mean time, is the firmware update/fix 'jeice28' mentioned before the same as a sytem update (i.e. 2.41) or is there seperate programs and such that will update/fix the printing encoding on media?

Cheers

no screw drivers work???? Warning, make sure you are not using any star tipped bits! They should always be either Phillips or flat head. If star then you are about to do some damage to the HDD!
