Got a SATA cable?

and a SATA power adapter on your power supply

Just hook it up, unplug your other HD if you are formatting through a XP CD or just hook it up and boot to Windows if your formatting through Windows. The CD is the best way in my opinion.
Once you get that far post back and I'll tell you what to do next.

Cheers. SO I hooked it up no probs and formatted it using this guide:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows...a71033.mspx#EFB

Gonna hook it back up to my PS3 and hope it goes well.

Hooked it back up and it froze a couple of times. But this was just on loading screens so I decided to test it for a bit longer.

After playing it for around 30 mins - 1 hour it froze again. It seems to happen a lot during loading screens but that may just be a coincidence.

The repair company I mailed said it may be the HD or the motherboard. Since I doubt it is now the HD, anyone have any tips how to diagnose the motherboard or what else could be wrong???

Cheers

Try this:

You may find it blow out a lot of dust. Do it once only, there are reports that repeatedly doing this will damage the PS3. You can't really damage yours more ;)

Does it freeze only on BD Games or games on the HD too? Maybe your BD Drive is bad.

I tried the fan test before, and it only really worked powerfully a couple of times strangely, but it still done the test.

I'm not sure if crashed with demos on the HD, but it sometimes crashes during the PS3 menu screen so I don't think it is the BD.

Have you heard of any motherboard problems/fixes or any other causes of this freezing?

Cheers

That same one? The link I believe I sent you before was for the 40GB. This requires you to hold it upside down.

Yeah already did that one. Sometimes the fans didn't get too noisy, but other times it did the full test.

Could it be an overheating problem or problem with the heat sinks, like is common with the 360's?

Yea, I was actually starting to think an overheating issue. If you want to take the risk and void your warranty which you don't have, take it apart and attempt to apply some Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease on the CPU/GPU. Even try to play it with the case open to see if it overheats that way.

Sounds like a plan, I'll open it up tomorrow and order some Arctic Silver. Is this the right stuff here:

the sata drive connects by using a sata cable. The ends look like an L. This would be the data cable. Then you need to hook up power... should be a larger L. Please don't worry about voltage, it won't hurt the drive.

Yes, that's it but I suggest you open it first and try to run it with the case off to see if it actually is a heat issue.

if your new HDD is giving you the same problem as the old one, its probably going to be the mobo, and no amount of blowing out dust is going to help. I'm thinking its the mobo here too. So replacing the thermal may fix this, but if its the heat sink and fan that have gone out...

At this point I don't think its an overheating issue unless the connections to the fans was accidentally pulled out. If you haven't done this already; re-check any and all connections. While your at it check for any burn marks inside that case! Hot thermal paste will do what grease does sometimes and leave a scorch mark too. That may tell you real quick something might have gotten fried.

Okay cheers for the advice folks.

Gonna open it up for overheating and also check if a fan may have came loose, since the fan test didn't always go loud.

Failing that, I'll get some thermal compound over the next few days and hope that works.

Gonna replace my Xbox 360 X clamp tomorrow, so that should give me some experience of cleaning and pasting the heat sinks.

Will keep you folks updated.

Cheers

RROD 360?

If so then RROD 360, Overheating PS3. What luck, lol.
You know MS fixes the 360s for free as long as you haven't opened it. RROD fixes are still free.

Yeah I know my luck hasn't been the greatest lately. My cell phone, PC and car all broke that week as well ha.

I modded and opened my 360 so that vioded my warranty, but the penny trick has worked on and off, so I'm hoping the X clamp replacement works for good.

And I thought I had bad luck at times.

Hello again folks,

Still haven't got round to replacing the thermal paste on my heat sink or trying it with the case open, but I have spent the last wee while replacing the x clamp on my 360.

After fixing this and the 3 red rings of death, my 360 games started freezing a few minutes in, the exact same way as my PS3.

Could this be to do with my television or setup, since both consoles are experiencing the same nature of problems???

Cheers

Its unlikely the television could be causing the freezing, though it could be where you have the consoles positioned. Make sure they aren't in a cabinet or any enclosed area and make sure the rear vent is at least 1.5-2 feet away from the wall or object. Usually ontop of the entertainment console is the best place.

And how hot is it in the room? Environmental heat could be a prime contributor as well.

If that doesn't solve your problem then you're looking at bigger issues than overheating.

The sad part is I went on rant about this fact on another forum a month ago. Thank you for asking this for me, I was about to ask this myself.

I shall take you found no evidence of scorching nor found any wires unplugged with your PS3 then. I hate to say it, but it sounds like the mobo is hosed if its still doing the same thing even with that new hard drive. (taps plays in the back ground in my domain for the possible loss.)

It must be the motherboard then. Is there any decent guides online that show you how to open up the PS3 and reapply the thermal paste??

Cheers

guides? Heck if I'm not mistaken its the same kind of clamp down heat sink you'd see from amd or early intel. Should be rather straight forward.
