article published on 16 July, 2008

The higher capacity model will now retail for $399 USD, taking over the price spot that has been held by the ... [ read the full article ]

From what I read, the new 80GB will basically be the 40GB with a bigger hard drive. It still won't include B/C, the 2 USB ports and Memory Card readers.

I got my MGS 80GB Bundle for $500. Any price drop won't affect me since I know I got DS3 and 2 free games with mine.

No it will be $399 like the 40 gig is now. I'm so happy that I bought the 60 gig unit when I did.

sony should have never went with 2 models to stat with ><

if they are phazing out the 40GB unit then drop it to 299 to get rid of it! it would be a boon for software and BR sales its all win win !

like a price cut will make a difference.....ps3 was a terrible market idea...way too expensive. If they wanted to sell more, they should have lowered therre initial price.

Ya its a price maneuver...sony should go right into a price war with MS I mean come on they lost FF13 do they want to lose other titles to?
they need to do a strict 299/399 price setup and leave it for the next 3ish years.

Isn't BWC a software issue anyway that can be fixed with a firmware upgrade? And the 80GB version will not have 4 USB ports and lose the memory card readers? Someone confirm please. There seems to be some confusion among the previous posts.

If the above is correct, then a $100 decrease for just a larger HDD doesn't really matter. You can get a 320GB HDD for $120.

Well BWC was really done by hardware in the ps3 cause is had a built in emotion engine that ran ps2 games but that caused the production costs to be a bit too high. So now they're trying to get it done with software but it's giving them a bit of a fight (maybe they should higher some hackers since they done seem to fully understand there own hardware)

@strife10 yes FFX "triple" is still gonna be out for ps3 as a matter of fact ps3 still has the edge because the Japanese version is still ps3 exclusive

This is more that it seems IMO.

What i see here is that new cheap Blu-ray players will be released really soon and if Sony wants to continue selling PS3's as BD players too is forced to cut the prices and that >>
Quote:
"attract millions of PlayStation 2 users who are on the cusp of upgrading."
is BS.
Also have in mind that PS3+BD has accomplished so far what game devs want, an "uncrackable" console/media to release games and that IMO will play a really great role for more PS3 exclusive games.
That equals to more profit for everyone that means they can afford to cut the PS3 price like they did.
Nevertheless 400$ for the 80gb ver will boost PS3 to the top, maybe before the end of 2008.
All that is left is to bring the damn thing (80gb ver) to europe finally.

They need to buy out the creators of pcsx2 and piggyback off the emulation work done so far. How can a hacker know more about a console than the manufacturer. It's probably the fact that they are trying to make sure that any emulation feature they provide is 100% uncrackable.

For all of you that think the new 80GB will include backwards compatibility, it won't. See the link I posted above.

Why are there still people saying the ps3 wa way too expensive when it came out. Are you people crazy. When the ps3 came out it was the top of the line enterteinment system and still is. Come on now why would you rather buy everything seperate like you have to do with the 360 instead of getting the entire package.

List of things ps3 has right of the bat that others don't:

.rechargeable batteries
.blueray player/dvd upscaler
.wireless internet (wii has it too)
and theres also new things like watching movies of from ps3 harddrive with the psp amazing. Let's also not forget about reliable systems (wii has those too).
I'm not a sony fan boy by the way i own the wii,ps3 and 360. I have about 20 games on my 360 and exactly 4 for my ps3 and about 15 for the wii. Love all games not systems but its obvious that the ps3 is superior even to any nintendo or microsoft fanboys

Just as embo22000 pointed out, The system IS expensive for just a gaming system but its much more than that! Its a home server! It includes the most powerful processor available to a consumer, A web browser, Linux capabilities, Blu-Ray, Integrated HDMI, Ability to run 1000s of games, including PS2 games for some. This thing if you think about it, can replace a home computer! Just because Sony has a different marketing strategy, don't hate them. To everyone that has it, Your set for a while, You'll be loving your PS3 when 360 owners are going to have to fork up another $300+ for another system to be able to play the newest games. When people say its too expensive, I always bring this up.

360 60GB - $350
Wireless Adapter $100
Component Cables in the box
No Games Included - $60 (since PS3 has a game)
Secondary Downloadable Game $10
------------------------------
$520

PS3 80GB (With B/C) - $500
Wireless Built in - $0
Component Cables - $25
Metal Gear Solid 4 - $0
PAIN Game - $0
------------------------------
$525

So people are bitching about 5 bucks I guess?

The entire senerio with the 80GB PS3 w/o B/c makes the PS3 cheaper. It plays more older games (all PS1) then the 360 (Few Xbox 1 games)
