Hello all.
I recently tried to do the disabling trick by crashing an update at 70%, however, I did this with version 1.3 and not 1.9b as recommended. I tihnk I must have misheard it.

I am now trying to restore my Wiikey but I cna't get anything I do to read. I am trying to use the 1.9b recover and the system does not read the disc.

I am thinking I should not have media problems because I used that same DVD-RW disc to load up the 1.3 I nuked my Wiikey on. In addition, I cannot get any Wiikey discs GCOS or COnfig or Updates to read at all.

Ideas?

I have burned the image on several media, including the verbatim and have had no results. It never worked at all or registered on the system. I get disk read errors.

Is it possible that my lens is dirty? Although crashing the Wiikey did allow me to play SSBB and MarioKart, it was spotty and would not always load. In some cases, the original copies of SSBB or MK would not load at all or only to certain screens. Keep in mind, I have burned the 1.9b recovery on the same media I used to burn the 1.3 update which I used to crash the wiikey.

I recently bought WiiFit as well and am able to play it most of the time, but on some occassions it crashes. This makes me think there are issues with disk reading in general.

Any ideas?

Ok, a couple things:

Why were you attempting to disable the chip? The only reason to do so was to play original copies of brawl, but there's no reason to disable the chip anymore since firmware 1.9s came out and that lets you play without bricking the chip.

Just so you know the system never reads the recovery disk. You just put it in and leave it for awhile, at least 5 minutes. Try doing that.

Do you mean the 1.3 config disk or do you actually have a 1.3 update disk? Because if you have the latter its EXTREMELY old. I've never even seen a 1.3 update disk, the wiikey was shipping with 1.9 when I bought mine. Of course if you do mean the config disk I don't know what you did because there's no way to disable the chip with that.

Finally, if you're still having intermittent problems reading disks with the chip disabled then it does sound like a general disk reading problem. First thing I'd try would be cleaning the lens.

First off,
Huge thanks for replying.

Second,
You say that the Wii never reads the recovery disc. If that is the case, I have had it sitting in the Wii for a duration of time. If there is no sign of the disc being read, how do I know it's taking it in? I've inserted it and it goes to the Wii Menu and sits there. Is it doing something at that time?

I went to Youtube and watched videos that said to kill an upgrade at 70% to play SSBB abd MK and I did just that, and it worked, however, I must have misheard since I could have swore it said use a 1.3 update disc.

I will try making another 1.9b recovery and just letting it camp out in my Wii for a few mins and then try a 1.3 config disk.

Short answer is that you don't know if its working. lol. Just leave it in the drive with the wii on the main menu and don't touch anything. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes, maybe even up to 10. Hopefully, what it should be doing is reinstalling the firmware to the modchip.

And for mario kart? You never needed to disable the wiikey for MK, that was only something that was required for ssbb. But like I said once 1.9s was released every game worked flawlessly so there was no reason to disable the chip. Once you get your chip restored with the 1.9b recovery disk just run the 1.9s update and you should be able to play all your games.

It had been awhile since I disabled the chip. before 1.9s came out. So I have been sitting on it for a while.

To be sure... you're saying that the 1.9b recovery disk:

- Does not read as a GC disk
- Does not recognized by the Wii in any visible manner
- Sits on the Main Menu with no apparent activity
- Should be there for 5 - 10 mins

That right?
Thanks again!

That does explain things.

And you're right:
- Does not read as a GC disk
- Does not recognized by the Wii in any visible manner
- Sits on the Main Menu with no apparent activity
- Should be there for 5 - 10 mins

I've never actually had to use the recovery disk but thats what I've heard from people who have used it. It's not supposed to look like it's working.

Wow. That's gonna suck. So if it does work, once I am done, what will I see as the change?

- Will my Backups just start to work? (they don't now)
- Will GC Update disks start to read (they don't now)

So confusing...

Was wondering. If it does work, will that mean that my config disks will then start to read as GC disks where they did not before? And if they do not but it did work, does that mean that I have a bad burn? And how can I tell?

Crazy. But I'll try it.

I dont get it. How is this confusing? You put the recovery disk in and let it sit for awhile and it should fix it. Fixing it would involve making the chip work again. Which, yes means that backup disks will work again. Backup disks working IS one of the main uses of a modchip. Whats not to get?

Hey Penguin. Thanks for stickin in there. Confusing only because it's vague. Directions are straight forward but no obvious signs of a "SUCCESS"! At any rate, did what you said... all good. Working as normal.

Thanks a heap.
