Updating X360 System OS & 79-Passkey - Any Issues??

I just purchased and Xbox 360. The manufacture date is 2007. My understanding is the latest system OS update for the box is Fall 2007.

My question is: I also just purchased a Maximus 79 Passkey which has not been installed yet. I was wondering if it is OK to fully update my X360 via Xbox Live (or manually) to the latest version AND THEN install the passkey to put it into Mode B to begin my game backup ventures.

Has anyone experienced any issues with this approach or with updating on Xbox Live (or manually) and the existing 79 Passkey?
