A search would have answered your question, but here you go...

By converting the files into the MJPEG format and then transferring them to your SD Card, you can watch video through the picture channel on your Wii. Wii video 9 woill do this but its more effort than its worth.

DVD's won't play.

If you install the homebrew channel, you can use MPlayerWii to read your movies and MP3 from your SD card, without converting anything and with a great quality.

I didn't try with dvd movies but it should work too
