Replacing Hitachi drive with Samsung. Transfer security key?

The drive in my kid's 360 stopped reading discs, so I ordered up a Samsung MS28 replacement drive with the intent of flashing it with Xtreme firmware. When I disassembled the 360, it had a Hitachi drive. Now that I'm reading about how the next Live update might include security measures that will catch & ban modded firmware, I'm a little leary about flashing with modded firmware. If that's the case, how would I recover the security key from the 360 or the Hitachi drive and add it to the MS28 drive to make it work? Am I stuck using the modded firmware and taking my chances, or is it possible to make the MS28 'stock'?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere. I've been reading dozens of mod sites and searches, and it's all starting to blend together.

I am in the same spot. Bad Hitachi drive with a Samsung replacment. (The Hitachi drive was replaced twice under wrranty. Both lasted 6 months. I understand the Samsung is a better drive) I don't want to install hacked firmware. Just remove the key from the Hitachi and it to the Samsung drive. Is there a way to do this under windows. My system will read both DVD drives under windows, but will not see then under DOS because of system board issues.

From what I've read even if you flash it with standard firmware and never play backup/burned games MS still has ways of detecting and banning your console from Live.
If someone else knows better then please let me know.
