Upgrading from 3.40 OE-A advice

It's been a while since I upgraded my PSP. But since my PS1 emulation just stopped working, I'm looking to hopefully upgrade to a newer version. I'm still wanting to emulate PSX obvsiously, however I notice that most newer CFW needs certain versions to upgrade to them.
Simply enough, I was just wondering if you could give me some advice to get the most out of my PSP. Thanks,

get 3.90 M33 then put the popsloader
