Official 3.52 Firmware to Custom Firmware

What are the stages for firmware upgrades that are essential?

I've read and researched tons of websites over the past few days and am willing to give the magic memory etc a bash.

However, I've struggled to find what stages I should upgrade to. I currently have the official 3.52 firmware. I'm planning to get up to one of the more recent 3.90 M33-4 or 4.01 M33-2. However, is there any stages I should visit before getting up to custom 3.90 or 4.01 or can I jump straight up?

And also, what size memory stick can I use? I've read anything and everything, every website quoting different things.

I've got a 64MB Memory Stick Duo and a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. Will any of these work?
