And basically the upgrade is supposed to be plug and play, remove - install - format - DONE. (I had a few demos but nothing worth backing up)
Format doesn't work, PS3 tells me that it wants a media w/ the 2.42 firmware, and doesn't go any further from that. No prob, put it on one my my USB's (FAT32 formatted), doesn't read, tried 3 different USB and even copied to a CD.
Its 2:45am here, I've been trying on and off for hours (googling), I'm guessing the issue is with the latest firmware
Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.
What? You cant be telling us that the mysteriour 2.42 firmware upgrade was so that the PS3 would only accept official Sony hard drives?!
One of the features s supposed to be the easily upgradability of the hdd. If this is true many PS fans will be very unhappy.
I think we should have an international boycott of sony products for like 6 months to a year. Sony has repeatedly put profits first rather than customers several times with just the PS3, they deserve to see how we feel this such actions!

Is your new HDD an external plug & play, or is it an internal 2.5"?
I highly doubt the new F/W is preventing you from upgrading your HDD. If your new HDD is an external all you can really do is format it to FAT32. If it is a 2.5" internal notebook drive you should be able to "pop" it right in the PS3, once installed and powered up it should prompt you to format and install the latest F/W.
