I've installed all the lastest drivers and firmware I know of..
Can't for the life of me figure this out

Wayne,

Have you set the region on your new burner yet ?

It probably needs to be set - control panel, systems, hardware, divice manager, highlight DVD/CD - right click on your drive, click on region, bottom of the page, select your region - close out, reboot, you're done :-)

HI Wayne, HI Pete, I don't have the exact answer to Waynes problem, but have a friend with the same situation. He had an older Compaq that he took to a guy to install a bigger HD. The installer didn't have the Compaq restore disc so he installed Windows 2000 from a clean install. It was either a professional or business version. The Compaq has both a dvd player and a CDRW. The CDRW works fine the dvdplayer gives the same error messages stated above. I think WIN2k is missing something for the dvd player to work but I have no idea what it is. At first it said directx was needed when we tried to install Windvd platinum. But that didn't fix the problem. I told him to find his original restore disc with Win 98 on it and start from there. Then upgrade. Compaq is great for strange drivers that are on their restore discs. Don't know what else to tell you except he still hasn't got it playing dvd's yet. He can't find his restore disc.

Thank you Jerry, there's a lesson to be learned there -

Being a 2X Compaq owner I could see his problem - me, I wouldn't EVER lose those "Golden Discs" -

It sure would be worth what ever they are charging to get another set from Compaq -

Hi Pete, Congrats on the Senior Member statis. I know what you mean about the golden discs. Besides this tower system I built, I have 2 Compaq laptops networked for my wife and daughter. I guard those restore discs carefully. I tried a clean install years back on one of them with Windows 98 I think. Half the hardware and drivers didn't work so I had to use the restore disc to Win 95 and then upgrade from there. Compaq has to be different. I hear they use a hidden section of the HD now for restore information. Is that true. I haven't really looked into that, just heard about it.

As a service tech at Best Buy: Never lose your Restore CDs.

Most PC manufacturers only charge you shipping, and you can have them 2 day mailed to your place of residence. We have the 1-800 numbers to every manufacturer we sell hanging on the Tech Bench's wall. :)

But some are evil, and charge you 80 bucks for them.
