What does this mean? It happens when I click browse and try to open a file... I've tried multiple .avis

system specs:
2.6ghz P4c
Asus p4c800 deluxe mobo
1 gig ddr400 ram
radeon 9800 pro

Just did a clean install of xp pro and downloaded the ffd show codecs, so I can watch the videos in WMP, but stupid tmpgenc won't open them.

does it happen to be a divx4 or divx5 file? i can't get my divx4 and 5 files to work with tmpg ... the audio file should work ... unless it's ac3

i'm still having problems with these video types that are divx4 / 5 so if anyone knows why and how to fix it .. lmk ... thanks!

I use this method on every XVID file I have encountered and it hasnt failed me yet. First, I run the file through AVI DECOMPRESS which comes with the freeware AVI2VCD. Take that file and run AVIC (four cc changer) which should have been installed along with the xvid codec. Change the header and description code to DIVX. Not divx4 or 5, just DIVX. Then pass the file though TMPGEnc and it shouldnt give you any grief. At least it doesnt for me! :)

RNF1968, thanks for the reply ...
It seems that i forgot about the avic ... anyhow the dvix change did not work for me ... but chaning the 5.0 to xvid/xvid worked ...

i am not really familiar with this ... but it doesn't change anything regarding the video and audio quality right? but it does make xvid use the 5.0 code?

confused... it worked... but i wanna know if there is any quality change ... visually ... no ...

thank a lot !

hey polaris .. there's a program called decompressx that minion sent me ... it works well ... all you need is the program .. pop it in ... and it puts the audio into pcm format( i think) which tmpg will gladly accept .. i can email you the program if you want ... just lmk ...

thanks RNF1968 ... now i can fun my computer all night .. hehe

dum dee doo ... ok nite nite

Glad to help! I know what you mean. I'm up all night sometimes too playing around. All the AVIC prog does is change the header. It doesnt change any specs or quality of the file. I guess its a way of "fooling" the encoder. :) Later!

With TMPGEnc you should ALLWAYS decompress the audio because TMPGEnc doesn"t Like Compressed audio...If you get a "Can Not open or Unsupported" message and you have the Correct codec installed then you should be able to fix this by going to "Options" to "Enviromental Settings" to "Vfapi Plugins" and Raise the Priority of the "Direct show File Reader" to "2"...This should work 90% of the Tme unless it is a XviD File in Which Case you Might want to Frameserve the File to TMPGEnc or use a Different encoder Because TMPGEnc Doesn"t Like the xvid codec at all.....Cheers
