I just got a new stand-alone DVR recorder. I want to copy a bunch of stuff off my DVR onto DVD's. Later on, I plan on going through and editing these to cut out commercials, but I haven't ever done that before and just need to get these off my DVR. I also want to copy a bunch of Hi8 video tapes off my camcorder.
So my question is, as I record these, does it matter if I use VR mode or video mode for my recordings if I am going to make my edits in something like Cutterman?
Everything I read about VR mode says that it is more flexible for editing than video mode. Is that mainly true when talking about editing on my stand-alone DVD recorder? If I'm doing the editing on my computer, can't the software tools deal with either mode affectively?
I just don't want to record a bunch of stuff in video mode, delete it off my DVR and then wish I had it in VR mode when I get around to editing it.
it depends what you want really, if you want a permanent copy, you make a video. and if you want to continually add more movies to the disc later on then use vr. the video mode will finalize the disc, no further writing possible. this means every drive will read this disc
vr on the other hand doesn't finalize the disc which means some drive do not read the disc but i believe once you've finished adding the videos you want, you CAN finalize the disc thus making the disc readable on all drives.
Thanks, that makes sense. But aside from adding more to the disk, what about editing the existing files on my computer. It looks like I can cut portions out of video files just as easily as with VR files if I use something like Cutterman or TMPGEnc. Is that correct?
you probably can edit and delete video on a vr if you know a software that let's you. the main thing is finalizing and it occurs on any type of disc you burn. basically, if you haven't finalized it you can do whatever you want. if you HAVE finalized it, you can only read from it. ( unless the disc is re-writable in which case you can erase the disc).
the basic idea for video was to burn a video. full stop.
the basic idea for vr was to let you decide when you're ready to finalize the disc.
so as far as i know, you can do whatever you want any vr discs until you finalize it.
(if you erase delete any movies off a disc they just get hidden unless you erase a re-writable disc)
