well after some time trying to rectify virtualdub-mod and various other programs I have discovered that Prism seems to be doing the trick quite well , the file-size is increased significantly... a 300mb MKV file is almost 1 gig converted so far But perhaps thi swill help others who are experiencing problems with mkv's and converting them. Also worth noting that , prism automatically downloads missing codecs so there is no need to go on a Codec hunt as I did previously.

Presumably after converting from mkv -> avi all that is needed is to burn it to DVD using Nero (hopefully) Yay!.
