So I did the x-clamp to my xbox 360 with artic silver. I put in a whisper fan and bought a cooling station for it. I heated the heatsinks up by putting fan on big heatsink. It worked for around half an hour but then it started going to working only 2 minutes. What can I do to keep it from over heating ?I put some pennys on teh bottom too still checking to see if those will work. Do you think drill holes in the bottom and putting the screws threw the case will help?

did you make sure to not over tighten the screws yet the die and sink has to touch. Screw the screw in crosscross fashion, this way not 1 corner or side is unevenly tight.

I have the same problem. I replaced my x clamp last week and it worked fine for the first few hours of play and now it freezes every few minutes and I have to keep turning my console off and on at the switch.

Did you manage to fix it by loosening the screws???

Re tighten as above, and make sure you followed all steps- including the important overheating step?!

Okay I tried loosening the screws and testing with the case open and it still froze.

So I took out all the screws, washers and heatsinks. What is the crosscross fashion I should use to re-insert the screws??

Also, I scratched my motherboard very slighly whilst originally replacing the x clamp and loosened the mini capacitor labelled C5R20. Others have done the same without causing problems, but I've attached the image of my damaged board just in case:

Well that didn't work so I loosned te bolts then let it over heat got a little bit hotter then before. Will test in the morining to see if it works. For an update first my xbox worked for a bit then gave me the redrings then I overheated it then it would turn on and frezze now it's back to 3 redrings once it turned on but froze I can tell the cpu is getting hot ,but not the big heatsink. Any suggestions? This is my second xbox I am not having luck with!

do you have rubber or nylon washers insulating the board? I looked at the picture it looks like you missed those. You could easily heat up that micro transistor and move it up a bit. If you have continuity from that point to the other i would just leave it alone. Still if you are using metal washers on both sides you could be shorting the board. So that would be one thing to check.

You should check your secondary error code and go from there. Troubleshooting for the 360 is getting a bit easier with the more defined error codes.

There is two people in this forum with teh same problem I did not post a picture. I used nylon washers and metal washers 1 nylon and one metal on each side nylon touching the motherboard of course. I reheated it and then tinghtened the screws again after hat it didn't seem to work. Every time I reheat it tt turns on once (still frezzes though) and every time after that it just gos to the red rings. The smaller heatsink gets hot pretty fast, the biger one dosn't get that hot.

heatsinks are supposed to get hot that means they are working. so that might be something you want to look into, as the gpu should be getting hot as well.

well it does get hot just not as fast as the other heatsink. It's probabaly because I have the fan I have never let it over heat ithout the fan on it I will try that!

you cant let it overheat without the fan on it, it will auto power itself off. temp sensor is connected to cpu.

This will keep the CPU plenty cool to prevent it from overheating while the GPU will get smokin' hot; like burn your finger hot!

That's probably the best tutorial you'll find around.

Now here are some pics of the cooling paste when I put it on

You have way too much thermal paste on there, you should take some rubbing alcohol and clean all around the processor die. Why in the world would you put artic silver on the back of a ram chip? That could be causing a short really easy.

With that being said it looks like you're causing more problems than you're solving. Artic silver 5 contains little specs of silver and could easily conduct electricity. Think of taking solder and running it up and down your ram chips...... I hope you get the point.

If i were you i'd clean off the ram chips and clean off the processor dies and start over. They need to look like this

and then apply just a dab of paste and smooth it out. You don't want it on anything besides the processor die.

So clean up your mess, do it right and let us know how it goes.

I used two metal washer, rather than 1 metal and 1 nylon, could that have been a problem. Also used spring washers underneath. I'm not getting an error, it's just freezing, but when I was it was 0110 - Cold Solder Joint. Is that the same error you are getting Decodem??

I'm going to try the heat gun fix tonight, so I'll let you know how that goes.

Does anyone know if you can use another motherboard with the 360 drive, componenets, etc. as I'm thinking of buying just a motherboard if this fix doesn't work??

Ok so I put a thin layer of ArticSilver first I put the screws threw the case it gave me to red lights after 2 seconds of 3 red lights. This happens all the time i moved them to inside the case same thing. What I did notice though is if I push down on both sides of the xbox 360 mobo it stays 3 redlights for 10 secogns longer wich mean the connections are loose how can I fix them so that my xbox 360 can over heat? I don't have a heat gun! Any suggestions

Sorry for jacking the thread mate. Do you have any idea what the error code is for your 3 lights?

To find this out:

Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.
You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:
All four lights flashing - 0
One light flashing - 1
Two Lights flashing - 2
Three lights flashing - 3

Report back the error code and I'll do some research for you.

If it's code 0110, like mine, then you'll likely have to heatgun the motherboard. I'm going to try this tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes.

You mentioned something about a loose connection, so maybe you have to do Willhelm's improved X clamp replacement using cut up pieces of credit/phone card on the chips to ensure a better flow. I'll get the link and try to help more once you've posted your error code.

Hope this helps.

Well see when I bend my xbox 360 it seems to give me the redrings for longer so I know there is just loose connections. I have error code 0110. I don'thave a heatgun though.
