I was planning on getting a DVD burner for my Swap Magic that I ordered. I've looked around a lot in these great forums, and I learned that I need some good quality blank DVD's such as Verbatim.
I was looking online for some good cheap DVD burners I could afford and I found these two:
Lite-On http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106228
LG http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136147
I was planning on buying one of those but I don't know much about DVD burners and I want to make sure that either of those can burn any type of blank DVD. If anyone knows, please tell me more info about these burners, and/or if you know a better burner I can get for around $25, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Out of the ones that you posted I would go with the LITEON. I don't know anything about it but it's got a Mediatek chipset and it's LITEON. ;)
The LG has a Panasonic chipset and I wouldn't have it. ;) jm2¢ of course. lol. :P
I would consider this ODD. link to Optiarc AD-7200A
You can flash some nice f/w to it and it's a good drive. ;) I have the SATA version but had the IDE version at one time. ;)
can you go SATA?? if so look at these. ;) linky
Of the 3 I would get the LITEON or LG. The LG doesn't do scans but it does a fine job of burning. ;) I have the iHAS120 and it's becoming my favorite with each burn. ;) It does pretty well with just about all media and it burns "smooth" and "quiet". :D

Thanks for responding. I will consider getting the LITE-ON one that I found, or that Optiarc one. I have another question though. I don't know what SATA is. How can I tell if my computer supports a SATA DVD burner, and are those SATA burners better than the LITE-ON one in my original post, and the Optiarc one greensman mentioned?

vdogg123,
do you have a spec to your computer or know the model and make of your mobo? If so you can determine what connections you have and so on.

I'm not sure what system specs you're looking for... sorry about this but I'm not extremely savvy with computers.
I have a Compaq Presario.
BTW, one of my DVD/CD-ROM drives is IDE, so does this mean I don't have SATA.
So are the SATA burners better?

vdogg if you can find the "model" # on the Presario that you have it would make it easier to find what components you have installed. ;) Having IDE doesn't mean you DON'T have SATA. I have 1 IDE connector and 8 SATA connectors on my mobo. And to answer your question I don't think that one format is better over the other. IDE and SATA work equally well on my system. I will say there is more available for IDE drives on the f/w front but does that make them better?? I think not. lol.

vdogg,
That's what we needed. :) Here's some info for your edification. :)
Quote: Motherboard Description
Mb manufacturer name: ASUS A7V8X-LA
HP/Compaq name: Kelut-GL6E
Quote: Storage
Two UltraDMA 100 IDE connectors
Two Serial ATA connectors
So from that I'm assuming (i hate doing that....lol) you have 2 empty SATA connectors, well at least one (1). I don't know what your HDD is and I'm guessing IDE interface. :)
So you can go with either SATA or IDE for your ODD but NOT knowing the chipset very well on your mobo there's NO guarantee it will work flawlessly. ;) btw you have VIA chipsets (looks like NB and SB)...
So in conclusion you can go either way with the ODD. IDE or SATA!! I like SATA because of the smaller cable and ease of routing but it's up to you ultimately. :P
I'm still recommending the LITEON iHAS120 (it's SATA)... nice drive so far for me. :)
GOOD LUCK with your decision.

Thank you so much Greensman!!!! You helped me out a lot.
I think I'm going to get the LITE-ON one I originally posted, instead of the iHAS120 one you recommended because of the free shipping. lol. I think I'll order it today, unless you have an objection on it or something. Thanks again greensman!
