Okay guys,
I have about 50 movies on an external hard drive. They are mp4 files, but when I put the external in my ps3 and hit the triangle to display all, everything says "unuseable data." I click on any one of the files and the ps3 won't play it?
What have I done wrong? I thought PS3s could play MP4 files... am I wrong. I see alot about Fat32. I will do some research on that, but any help would be beneficial to me.
thanks
jared

MP4 is a canister and the audio and video are in that canister. It depends on how the files in the container are encoded. The PS3 is picky about what you can play on it.

I used Mac the Ripper and Handbrake to back up the movies to take on tour with me this summer. Now I have them all on my external hard drive as MP4 files. I have been all over google and most people are playing MP4 files on PS3 but mine are showing up as "unsupported data." I don't know much about this type of thing, but does anyone know why my PS3 won't play these MP4 files? Better yet- can someone direct me to how to get them to play? I have them sorted in a video folder on my external and that folder shows up on my PS3 menu but everything is "unsupported data." What is Fat32, do I need that, and is that possible on a mac?
Anyone?
thanks

sorry to add more, but is there some other format that I should convert these mp4 files to and just stop messing with mp4?

Like Zero said it will be because the codec used with the mp4 files is not compatible with the PS3.

ie is it using divx, xvid, h264 etc. You also have to be carful with sound codecs, the PS3 wont play 5.1 sound for some reason.

Try changing to a different format such as MPEG-2 or Audio Visual Intergrate?

Jrod,

Sorry if you've already done it. Have you tried using a program like GSpot to find out what's in your Mp4s?

If your using Handbrake then your encoding to h264.
What could be is that the profile of the video stream isnt compatible, so you would have to run it through h264info, but there in lies the another problem as i think its only made to run on windows.
So i you can find an MP4 DE/Remuxer for MAC take alook an see if quicktime could change the profile for you.
