Hi all. I am new to the Wiikey and don't know anyone else who has one so I can't tell if what I am experiencing is normal operation.
I have a first gen US system, D2A with the Wiikey and Wiiclip with the 1.9s firmware. I burn at 1x using imgburn, latest release, and Verbatim DVD-R. I have noticed that the first time I insert a back-up disc after turning on the Wii it will not read the disc and I get the big white question mark error. If I eject and reinsert the disc it is then readable. As long as I don't turn it off I can keep changing discs and they read on the first insert. If I turn off the machine for a few seconds so that the dvd drive "resets" (that is what I call it beacause when I restart the machine I hear a lot of drive movement) then I have to insert the first disc twice.
It seems this occurs with both DL'd and original game back-ups. Is this the normal operation of the Wiikey or have I gone wrong somewhere? If abnormal does anyone have any suggestions? Thnanks in advance. ---Chikn
I figured that the discs should act just like "original" discs. It is certainly annoying. Or I should say was. Soon after posting my problem I tried a "new" back-up. To my surprise it worked on the first try. I tried several times with the other discs and they seem to working properly at start-up. I should be relieved but am actually a bit dismayed because I haven't figured out the problem and am worried it will be intermittent.
Before install I checked my soldering job carefully several times and there were all good contacts with no cross contact soldering. The Wii clip seemed to sit well in place. In fact before the problem self-corrected there was no movement or jarring of the Wiiconsole to influence a bad contact. Of course heat may expand a miniscule defect enough so that it becomes functional but I don't think that is the case as the problem was happening from start-up.
I upgraded to the Wii firmware 3.3u before installation of the Wiikey. This is the latest I think. Perhaps this influenced function of my Wiikey, but then the problem should still be there. I will try to play a few of these games this weekend and see if the problem doesn't reoccur. If you have any theories I"d love to hear them! Thanks. ---Chikn
So here I am again back to the insert disc 2x thing...No luck. I can play the back-ups but can't figure out why the system does not work properly! Any thoughts on where to start would be great.
Edit: So At first load of the disc the drive starts, then stops spinning after a few seconds, at least I can tell by the sound. If I hit reset the game will load into the game channel.
So here I am with my second Wiikey/Wii clip. I am still having some of the same issues, intermittent recognition of the burned games. Put the game into the Wii, it may be recognized. Take it out try something else, put that game back in and nothing!
This time I have made all of my back-ups from original games using GDR 8162b 015 firmware. Rips come out perfect size, no errors. I burn using imgburn and Verbatim DVD-R media. When I try to burn in image burn I select 2x but Imgburn says media only supports 4x, 8x, 16x, 18x. It seems to write at 4x no matter if I choose lower speeds. These seem to be new packaging for the verbatims up to 16x vs old package 8x. I have tried burning at 4x and 8x but still seem to get randomly playing games. It does not happen with all games but it's hard to know which ones will work ALL THE TIME. Does anyone think this could be the problem or have any other thoughts on this??? Thanks. ---Chikn
