Bitstream and Linear PCM

Hi
So I have been fiddling (as you do) with my AV setup over the weekend.
I have my PS3 running as my main DVD player/gaming platform.
I decided after a recent post to set up my Audio via Optical and go for Visuals via HDMI which in terms of inputs with my AV Receiver etc worked out fine.
However I noticed that under the Linear PCM setting on my PS3 that the AV Receiver suggested sound was only coming from the Left/Right Speakers (5.1 setup). Sound was definately coming out of all of them though. It began to bug me that the OSD suggested only two speakers operational though. I looked through the PS3 setting to find under Audio (or whatever it was) that there was a Bitstream option available which I clicked just to see what happened. My AV Receiver suddenly lights up that all speakers were now active and the sound was much better than Linear PCM.
My question is, is this the usual way that Bitstream is better than Linear PCM when using Optical for Audio?
Any pearls of wisdom would be appreciated.

Bitstream is for digital optical and linear PCM is for running the sound through HDMI. Why you where getting sound through your speakers set to linear PCM with bitstream i don't know. If you have a reciever that can do all the fancy dolby digitals then HDMI is better. With HDMI you can get certain dolby digital formats that are only broadcasted through HDMI and not through optical.
