Apple will replace faulty iPod Nano batteries in Japan

article published on 21 August, 2008

As we have previously reported, Japan's trade ministry issued a warning on Tuesday that three fires have been linked to overheating iPod Nano units from Apple Inc., possibly due to a battery defect. Apple has responded by promising to replace faulty over-heating batteries from first-gen iPod Nano models in Japan. "We will replace batteries of the first-generation iPod nanos with new ones ... [ read the full article ]

Shouldn't they replace them before they overheat? if my house burns down, why would i care about a new ipod nano battery?

Nah...if your house burns down at least you can get mugged for your iPod at the homeless shelter... Or listen to cool over priced music while you sift the ashes for what's left.

core2kid, I have a 4 and I am not the least bit scared. Mine barely warms up, MAYBE 10 degrees F above the before charge temp. My case prevents me from charging in the case. I would never charge in the case after this warning. Charging out of the case allows you to monitor the temp. I am sure over heating damages the battery so that it heats up more the next time. I hate Apple but I hold them blameless for this problem. It is not reasonable that they would have forseen persons charging their ipod in an insulated case when they were designing the nano. I am sure they intended the metal case to disapate the heat. I blame the case manufactures for designing insulating cases and not testing them.

Hmm I've had the first gen nano since its launch. And have had a leather case protecting the whole time. Now that I just take it out I notice a small dent in the metal back plate and stress marks around the click wheel =/ But besides that, I don't think I've had a problem with overheating. And it seems the problem is with Japanese nano's. And if it blows up I still have my iPhone, but if that blows up, I am going to Apple. No way in hell I'm buying a third one.

I bet you they had Sony batteries. That's who was responsible for the "exploding" batteries in Dell notebooks about 6 years ago.

Hardwyre, you might be right but I figured all the ipods might be the same since they are made in China. However, Sony is powerful enough (big on bribes) to force Apple to use their batteries if they wanted to sell ipods in Japan.

My theroy is they were all made the same but there was a case sold in Japan that allowed connection to the power source inside an insulating case.
