going to new york soon and wanted to stock up on wii games. once bought in US can games be played on console bought in ireland??

Depends on what region the games are, ALWAYS safest to play same game on same region console, You can play different region games on console with mod chip but you run the risk of a brick, search it and learn more.

Hopefully I can expand a little bit more on the previous answer.....

The US uses NTSC as their TV system. Here in the EU we use PAL. A game bought in the US will most probably be NTSC and therefore will not be compatible with a PAL console on a non-modded console
