AVI's to DVD advise

I have been using Nero Visions to burn AVI's to DVD. It works good and all but, I want to know if there is a better way to burn AVI's especially T.V. episodes to DVD. I am not sure if it is my computer but, it seems to take a long time to convert like 3 to 4 hours using Nero. FYI: To be on the safe side I go from AVI to ISO image then burn the ISO to DVD. I have had trouble in the past burning straight from AVI to DVD using NERO. I hope there is a faster more stable way. Thanks.

It takes about as long as the total time of each eposide to convert it to an iso; so if you have 3 hours worth of eposides it would take that long. I use Xilisoft AVI to DVD and it works good; but I always convert them to an iso image.

Convertxtodvd works well for converting. Then I make an iso and use imgburn to burn to dvd.

On the other hand - just put the avi files directly on the dvd as data. Then all you need is a dvd player that reads avi or divx. The dvd will hold several avi files. Saves a lot of space. The avi files play as good as dvd files if you source is good. Converting won't improve the quality if it's bad to start.

I bought a player for like $60 that reads all the formats AND will upconvert to near hd using a hdmi connection to an hd tv.

wait a min. Are you saying it might just be as easy to burn a data dvd and drop the avi into the burn program? Then if my DVD player says AVI or DIVX it will play it? If my DVD player doesn't say AVI but says DIVX will it still work?

Any burn program can put an avi onto a dvd or cd disk as "data". A dvd will hold more data than a cd.

In order to play the format (avi) on your standalone machine it must be able to read the files. Some dvd players can read avi or divx, some can't. Check the owner's manual. My Toshiba (sd6100) does. I bought it just for that ability. Check at the store before buying, they usually list supported formats on the shelf or ask the clerk.

this is what I use/do to convert avi to mpg for dvd.

I use a program called Total Video Converter. Can be used to convert avi to PAL or NTSC and takes about 2-3 hours. (I'm in Aussie so use PAL).

It selects the avi file (movie), selects PAL/NTSC and converts all that is necessary - very easy and simple.

For TV programs, I transfer file to PC and use VideoReDo - again very simple.
