Hi I'm a bit of a newbie to these forums so please bare with me. I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help but here goes.

A good friend of mine recently moved to America with his fiancée and took his PS3 with him.

he assumed that by plugging it in using a voltage converter that he would be able to use his UK ps3 over there, however upon switching it on, the lights came on for a few seconds then went off, and now i don't think it does even that.

I'm not sure whether it was the power that killed it, or whether something happened to it during the flight, but it is pretty dead.

He has pretty much resigned himself to the fact that he will have to buy a new one, BUT he has not only his PS3 save games, but years of backed up PS2 and PS1 saves too (which i'm not sure he still has the original memory cards for) and he is REALLY desperate not to lose his data.

What i would like to know is if there is ANY way of transferring the data to a new hard drive to put in a new PS3??

Can he just put the drive from his old PS3 in a new one and continue that way?, i think i read that if you put a HDD with data already on it in another PS3 it makes you format it.

If he jsut got a new PS3 and then connected the old drive via a USB enclosure would that allow the data transfer?

Aside from the data problem, I would also like to know, if possible, what he did wrong. What would be the correct way to power a UK PS3 in the states? or did he do it the correct way and it was something else that killed the PS3?

Well he didn't need a voltage converter as the PS3's power supply is regulated for both 110 (US) & 220 (EU). All he needed was a new cable if the connector was different, actually he should try that anyway as what more can he do to break it?

Other than that he could send it out to Sony and hope it would be under warranty, if not it would only be $150 to fix it (instead of buying a new one) and he should have his games saves in tact afterward. But as far as taking the new HD out and putting it into another PS3 I am unsure that would work...possibly? maybe? could be? Though remember his PS3 is a UK model and he would get a US model (I am guessing) so that in itself may cause an issue because of difference like PlayTV, different PSN etc.

he has tried just plugging it in with a plug adapter and it doesn't work. i'm thinking that if the PS3 can handle 110 and 220 then the step up transformer should not have killed it, which leads me to believe it must have occurred some damage in transit somehow, possibly from being too cold in the baggage hold of the plane.

the trouble with sending it to sony is that a) i think it is out of warranty, and b) he rang them up and they said he would have to send it back to Sony UK as it is a UK model, which would ost a heck of a lot in postage and then they said they would just replace it with a new one, which would be a 40gig one and wouldn't be able to play his PS1 and 2 games, which is important to him.

i wouldn't have thought that the different PSN would be an issue if he got a new US model but at any rate i think he was intending to get another UK one

When i returned my old faulty PS3 to the shop and was given a new one, i asked him to swap the HDD out so i could keep my saves etc. Unfortunately, when i got home the new PS3 made me format the drive.

The drive has to be formatted if it is removed from on PS3 and put into another. it only doesnt need formatting if you put it back into the same PS3.

hmmm i wonder if there is a way of accessing the data on the drive and modifying it so that you replace teh id of the old ps3 with that of the new one, thus tricking the drive into thinking it had been put in to the ps3 that it is tied to

alternatively, i've heard that it is possible to back stuff up to a usb device. if we were to use an external USB enclosure thinggy could we connect the old drive to the new ps3 via the usb and transfer the data across that way??

You could buy a drive mount for the pc then transfer all his data over to the pc?

i did think of that, but i think someone said PS3 uses an unusual file structure and the PC wouldn't be able to read it

i also thought that if you got a usb enclosure you might just be able to connect it straight up to the new ps3 as if you were just transferring data from a usb memory stick or something

NO! The PS3 Formats the HD when a new one is put in.

Ok, Do this:
Try a normal power cord. If that works, good. If not then something is fried on the inside. If you are willing to open it up, check the Power board. You could have just blown that. You could have also just blown the adapter because the PS3 uses more power than the adapter could handle. Let us know if you get it to work.
