Hi I have backed up Region 1 discs using DVD Shrink and Nero 6. With DVD Shrink you can make the disc multi region, the only thing I have had to do is force our standalone DVD players to use PAL output only not set to automatic (on our players by pressing a button on the remote).

First off , are you able to play the R1 disc in your drive that you're intending to rip/unencrypt with ?

when i go to open disc thou it starts analysing and then says
" copy protection error the read failed because the sector is encrypted"

nasher, your DVD is copy-protected (encrypted). you need to download a software called "DVD Decrypter" and decrypt the DVD before using DVD Shrink.
