Help! AVI won't open in TMPGEnc

yes, i am a stupid noob who knows close to nothing about this stuff, which is why i need help. im trying to convert my .avi to mpeg using TMPGEnc, but when i browse for the file using the "browse" button next to the "video file" and try to open my avi, it says that "blah blah blah file could not open, or unsupported." now there are two things that confuse me even more: 1) i can open the avi when i click the browse button for the audio file and 2) i can open 2 or 3 other avi's that i have this way just fine. now my main goal is to burn these files onto a DVD, but i need to convert them first, so any respones would be helpful, even if they are harsh cause im a noob. THANK$.

Heyah,
Ok, i can help u this much.. use Canopus ProCoder to convert ur .AVI files.. it handles those errors much better!!
and if u want some really good info, read my topic ".AVI to VOB! there is lots of help, that got me trough all the sections to get an .AVI file to a dvd.

thanks. but i just downloaded the procoder demo, and whenever i try to convert my AVI to a mpeg2 dvdv NTSC it coverts for about ten minutes then an error comes up and says, "output length longer than 5 minutes. conversion has stopped." i have read over the hrlp section of the program and it says nothing about errors. so now, once again, i am stumped. on the bright side, it did actually start to work unlike TMPGEnc.

hey, me again. i've been trying different programs and different files, but the programs that seem to work the best are TMPGEnc and Canopus Procoder. my only problem is that i get errors on both of them. on TMPGEnc, it says the files cannot be found or are unsupported, so i am forced to opening it as an audio, which only gives me the audio of that AVI. then Canopus actually starts to convert but then times out after ten minutes or so. the thing that's really confusing me is that some of my AVIs work fine and convert on both programs, while the main ones i'm trying to convert don't. yesterday i downloaded divfix to see if there were any errors in my AVIs, but there weren't. so if anybody has any ideas on what to do that would be great, thanks!

ive had this many times with avi the best solution i have found is to put your avi through windows movie maker and save as avi again then put through tmpgenc works for me good luck ps let me know how u go

thanks a lot guys, but sadly, i have another problem. (:(
i opened my AVI in Windows Movie Maker and saved it, but when i play it in Windows Media Player the video goes like three times as fast as the audio. i don't reelly understand why it does this especially because it plays fine in Movie Maker. now when mlr told me to open it in Movie Maker and save it from there, i hit the save movie button and selected "Other..." in the "Settings" bar, and then selected "DV-AVI NTSC (25 Mbps)". this is the only way i know to save it as an AVI in this program, any other setting would save it as a WMV, which wouldn't be helpful. so now that i think about it, i think that 25 mbps is too fast for it, but, again, i don't know how to save it as an AVI at a slower setting. so if there's another way to save it as an AVI and have play normally, please let me know. then once i get this step down i'll try the rest of your suggestion, mlr. thanks again guys!

all right, so far everything is working fine. but there's something i want to do before i burn the fiel, i want to remove the subtitles. i tried using VirtualDub, but when i loaded the original AVI, it gave me an error message, and when i loaded the WMV, it gave me another error. so if you have some advice on this or on using other methods to remove subtitles, that would be greatly appreciated. thanx!

ok, i gave up on the removing subtitles thing for now, but i still have a problem. *sniff sniff* lately Windows Movie Maker has been freezing whenever i try to highlight or play more then one clip, or when i try to stop a clip. it was working fine before. i don't know what happened or if there is a way to fix it. any ideas or suggestions would equal good things on my part. if your still using movie maker one go to microsoft downloads and get movie maker 2 and try that it also helps if you defrag your system at least once a month as this helps to speed up your system by cleaning up your files and putting them in the right place ive noticed a big difference after a defrag you can also get direct x 9 why your on the download site,from microsoft.com

ok, i got Window's Movie Maker 2, and it's working very nicely. although i am also trying to make a music video, and when i insert a transition in storyboard mode, the program automatically closes. no warings, no nothing, it just closes. if someone could help me with this, that would be just swell! :)
