I would Say that "Vegas Video 4/DVD Architect 1.0" is better is Some ways than Premier Pro because you do not have to buy the Mpeg1/2 and Dolby digital Encoders seperately were with Premier pro you do,and Vegas is a Lot easier to use and Has a Much less Crowded Interface, I also Like the Transitions and Effects Better in vegas 4 and they are easier to use, and you can not Capture from analoge Sources useing Premier Pro but you can with Vegas 4...
So it is Basicly a Matter of Choice they Both Have simular Features and there Respective Mpeg encoders are of Simular quality ,Premier Pro has a Faster Rendering Time and Has More Plugins and Modules that can be used with it...I own all 3 of the Programs you mentioned ,Vegas Video 4/DVD architect and Premier Pro 7 and Ulead Media Studio pro 7..For someone that Has never really done any editing then Media Studio pro 7 is a good Program because it is actually 7 Seperate Modules which in the End Has More features than Both Premier Pro and Vegas 4 ,It has a Module for Video Capture and one for Editing Video and one for Audio Editing and one for Adding Painted on effects and one for createing CG Animation and one for Burning Disk Images to CD/DVD and a DVD authoring Module ,It isn"t as High quality of a program But very Full Featured.....If you Let me Know what you are Looking for in an Editing/DVD Authoring Package then I might be able to tell you what one would suit you best...Cheers

If you want to edit Mpeg/SVCD Files and save them with no Quality loss then none of the Program you mentioned will do this as they are not really meant for editing Mpeg files and will allways re-encode the File when rendering therefor Lowering the Quality..For proper Mpeg editing you will need a proper Mpeg Editor and one that is Frame accurate as most Mpeg editor will only edit on an I frame and if you are useing a Large GOP then it will be difficult to edit accurately and when you try to edit on a Non I Frame then you can get sync Problems...One of The Best Frame accurate Mpeg editors is Called "Mpeg2VCR" it is Very Fast and is a Frame accurate editor that will produce edited files with no Quality Loss from the Original because it does not re-encode accept for a Few Frames in a Gop you started your edit on and that is only if you edit on a Non I frame....Cheers

I agree that Womble MPEG VCR is the best mpeg editor there is and it's great for joining too. It even has a few built in transition effects that can be added that take very little time because it only re-encodes the necessary frames and not the entire file. You can get the trial version here: http://www.womble.com/vcr-text.htm
