I have a Japanese version of Wii that has a mod chip when bought in China. I was told that I shouldn't use the machine online? Is this the case? Can I still obtain firmware using wifi if the machine has a modchip on it? Will that cause Nintendo to lock the machine?

Also, how can I find out which mod chip I have in my machine? Does it also need firmware update? How could I tell?

You can still go online with a modchip. There are no negative side effects.

Yes you can still update the Wii in the Wii Settings. No.

Ask the modder what chip they put in the machine. But since it was modded in China I doubt they would know. So it's best for you to open it up and possibly take a picture of it for us to see.

Thanks for the quick reply. Since my console is a Japanese one.. would I be able to update through wifi with the Japanese version?

Are there instructions to show me how to open the Wii so I won't damage it?
