Hey all,
I have done lots of searching and reading and can't seem to figure out the problem.
I have been trying to make backups for the last 3 days and all I have is about 20 coasters!
I bought a modded XBOX from a friend and he gave me a burned copy of "Viva Pinata" which is on a Memorex DL disc.
I am burning using imgburn onto Memorex 8x DL discs using a Lite On LH-20A1H drive.
I have my bit setting to DVD-ROM. (Is there a way to confirm that this was correctly set after I burn the disc?)
I also have set the layer break to 1913760.
I have tried burning at 2x, 2.4x, 4x all to no avail.
On one game (Ninja Gaiden 2) if I start the console with the disc in the drive it says "Reading" then "Open Tray". If I open and close the tray it gives me the option to "Play Game" but always comes back with the dirty disc error message.
The other game I tried to burn just gives the unreadable disc message.
Let me know if there is any other info you need....any help is appreciated as this is driving me nuts!
Thanks!

Do you know what drive you are using?, are the burns failing?, if they are burn complete and do not play... i have been having this issue with a friends consol i modde., it's perfectly modded but it's super iffy with burnt games. i have only tryed memorex dl dvds on my benq all games play fine, although in a diff topic i started i kinda screwed my drive up. oh yea see if u have a ts-h943 drive, early model drives, real iffy on the media used...im sorry i have not come up with a solution to this problem myself. if i can get games workin on that drive i'll post my findings

Is there a way I can tell what drive is in my 360 without opening it up?
Also regarding the crappy media - why would one game work fine that was burned by someone else and non of my 20 some burns work? That would lead me to believe that the problem isnt related to the media but I am no expert!
Thanks for all the help so far!

tell your friend to burn you another game with his own burner and if it works then you are not burning games how they should be

From what ive read memorex are awful for DL disks .. so personally i would not use them. Try verbataim. If you want to stick with the memorex then try and use a different pc/ burner. Have you only tried to burn the same image 20 or so times or various games as the image your downloading could be the problem.
Just in case it helps i tend to use verbataim, burn @ 4x and use clone CD. Think ive only every had a bad burn once and that was because of a dodgy image.
Hope this helps

So, I agree with everyone else, you definitely need to use Verbatim dual layer discs. It really is just a much better quality disc, the cheaper stuff will wear out your laser faster in your 360, and you'll have these problems too. So I would atleast give that a show.
Also, you didn't mention any single backup that has worked for you. Do you have a copy of a backup that works on both a friends 360 AND yours? It could also be a flashing issue.

Also if you get verbatums make sure they are made in SINGAPORE and not INDIA. The India ones make alot of costers. I should know 1st hand I bought a pack and got alot of failures.
I had a quick question. I recently changed out my motherboard on my computer and it seams the DVD DL BURNER takes a slow burn w/several pauses though out the burn. Is this normal or is it time to replace the burner?
It didnt use to pause for a long time before I replace the motherboard.

I am headed out to grab some Verbatims to try today. Do I need to to buy the DVD+R DL's or DVD-R DL's?
Thanks! I will update as soon as I have tested with one of them!

3 mistakes off hand I read.
1- Dont use memorex, Switch to Verbatims, suck it up.
2- I am very anti LITE ON, they suck, even if others disagree,
BUY a pioneer, 115d should suffice.
3- 8x? your very brave, keep it at 4x and youll thank me later
The positive, your using IMG burn, make sure you set the layerbreak.
So suck it up.

I think they were talking about the speed of burning on the retail case label right?
Not what speed they were actually burning backups.
I know at Best Buy I've bought Verbs that were 8x but at Sams Club they sell the 2.4x.
I might be wrong but I think there is some confusion about burning speed versus the speed that is on the retail label right?
I don't think anyone on here would say burn your games at anything above 4x and only if you're successful at 2.4.

Hi all.
I have a problem with coasters too.
I have a flashed 360, and i have made a backup of bad company on verbatim dvd+r dl which worked fine. (read with sh d162d with kreon firmware)
Trouble is that my xbox scratched the disk and it is now unplayable,so i made another backup from the image which was still on my HD.
I have now made 5 disks, all coasters. I keep getting the message 'unplayable disk'.
I have tried writing the image from clone cd, imageburn 2.4.0 + 2.4.2, i have input the layer break into imgburn, and tried burning on a sony dvdrw aw-g17a and a liteon dvdrw lh-20a1h.
No luck!
I cannot understand why the first backup worked but all others haven't (i have checked the iso with xdvd mulleter beta 10.2, no probs found).
Any ideas anyone?
thanks.

^^^ before any1 tries that - if using IMGburn simply make sure ur book type is set to DVD-ROM, Layer Break is set to 1913760, use Verbatims made in Singapore and burn @ 2.4x, if 2.4x doesnt work drop it to 1x if that doesnt work then go to 4x (ppl say dont burn @1x but its been workin fine great with me for over a year now ...
i say this cause if ur ONLY having problems with games YOU are burning than its a 95% chance that u or ur computer computer is the problem - not the 360 ...

Ok I got the Verbatim media from Singapore (the media is 2.4x max speed) and I am making progress.
The 3 games I have burned (Merc's 2, GRID, Ninja Gaiden) are all recognized but freeze very often and most of the time don't get past the initial loading.
To summarize I am burning the DVD's using ImgBurn with the Layer break properly set and book type set to DVD-ROM.
Retail games play fine with no freezes.
Any ideas are appreciated!
Thanks!

That's usually a sign that either your burner is messing about (pioneer112d or above FTW) or your laser is past it's best...
Don't have anything else running in the background when you are burning, and turn the screensaver and all the other crap off.. especially avast antivirus.. if you use that.. because it has a nasty habit of kicking up right when you are in the middle of something.

It's not the Memorex because between myself and three friends, we've burnt easily 175 games with no coasters. We have three different brands of burners; NEC, Liteon, and Pioneer.
Maybe in the past they had problems but they've been serving us well for nearly six months.
